Overview
Five hours. That's how long a Triumph craftsman spends on the tank alone for this Chrome Edition — five more than for a standard production Scrambler 1200 XE. Three hours of polishing, two of chrome plating, meticulous preparation before painting, and a final inspection that is anything but a formality. The result is immediately striking: a surface as reflective as a mirror in a luxury locker room, wrapped in a Brooklands green stripe that gives the whole thing the air of an athlete in a tuxedo.

The problem is that this motorcycle was supposed to be ridden. The base Scrambler 1200 XE is a serious machine, built for genuine adventure: a 47 mm inverted fork with 250 mm of travel, adjustable Öhlins rear shock absorbers, and a 90/90-21 front tyre to tackle broken trails. The 1200 cc parallel twin produces 90 horsepower at 7,250 rpm and, more importantly, 109.8 Nm at 4,500 rpm — meaning torque that comes in early, almost too generously for woodland tracks. At 207 kg dry with a seat height of 870 mm, this is no pocket-sized bike, but it commands respect from the first kilometres of off-road riding.
Triumph decided to wrap all that technical seriousness in ceremonial dress. The Chrome Edition belongs to a collection of ten machines selected from the brand's Modern Classics lineup, from the Bonneville to the Rocket III by way of the Thruxton, each fitted with a chromed tank finished to a greater or lesser degree. These editions will remain in the catalogue for one year only, as the Gold Line editions were before them. Planned scarcity has its price.
And that price is €800 above the standard Scrambler XE, putting it at €17,945 on the order form. At that figure, you're edging up against an Africa Twin Adventure Sports or a GS 1250 in standard trim. Triumph is playing a different tune: one of desire, of collectability, of the motorcycle you buy as much to admire in your garage as to take out on the Atlas Mountain tracks. The intended audience is no longer the hardened traveller looking to cross Mongolia, nor the neo-adventurer in search of mud. It's the connoisseur of fine machinery who wants something unique — capable of turning heads at a Sunday rally just as much as at a dinner among enthusiasts.
The paradox remains intact. All the premium hardware is present: Brembo radial-mount four-piston calipers on 320 mm front discs, a proven steel tubular frame, a 16-litre tank for comfortable range, a machine capable of 200 km/h at the end of a straight and able to absorb a dirt trail without complaint. But no one is going to risk that chrome finish on a forest path. The Chrome Edition is a contradiction on wheels, and that is precisely why it is so hard to ignore.
