Overview

Can a Japanese custom from the early 2000s still excite today, against the competition from Harley-Davidson Sportsters or Yamaha V-Stars? Let's take the 2003 Suzuki VL 800 Intruder Volusia and see if it holds up beyond its calibrated retro look. This model, sometimes confused with the 2001 version, succeeded the Marauder, freely borrowing from the style of its big sister, the Intruder 1500. The result is a well-balanced low rider silhouette, with its large headlight, chubby fenders, and imposing fork, all highlighted by chrome that catches the eye. The overall look is harmonious, almost elegant, but Suzuki spoiled the picture with a swingarm whose lower part is in black plastic. An annoying detail on a motorcycle that wants to be premium.

Suzuki VL 800 Intruder Volusia

For propulsion, no surprises: we find the 805 cm³ V-twin from the Marauder, displaying 52 horsepower at 6000 rpm and a torque of 69 Nm from 3500 rpm. Water-cooled but styled like an air-cooled engine, it is coupled with a shaft transmission, a real plus for maintenance and peace of mind. The engine is supple, discreet, and delivers its power in a very linear fashion. It does the job without laziness, but let's admit it, it lacks bite compared to competitors who often display 10 horsepower more. Top speed peaks around 160 km/h, which is sufficient for cruising, but we would have liked a little more punch for overtaking.

Where this Volusia seduces is in its road behavior. With a wheelbase of 1655 mm and a low center of gravity, it inspires absolute confidence. The 700 mm high seat is wide and welcoming, the riding position is relaxed without being exaggerated, and the suspensions, although simple, correctly absorb imperfections. It is a machine that encourages leisurely riding, to the point that we almost forget its 267 kg when fully fueled. The chassis is actually more capable than it appears; it would even forgive a slightly more sustained pace if the 140 mm ground clearance wasn't so stingy. The brakes, a disc at the front and a drum at the rear, are correct without being sporty, perfectly in line with the spirit of the machine.

Ultimately, who is the rider of this Suzuki VL 800 Intruder Volusia? The traveler looking for a reliable, comfortable, and hassle-free custom, preferring quiet rides to explosive performance. Its 17-liter tank and shaft drive make it a serene companion on the road. For around 8400 euros new at the time, it offered a solid value for money. An in-depth test reveals a well-finished motorcycle, equipped with a dashboard integrated into the tank, but which suffers from a lack of personality and small savings on finishes. It doesn't revolutionize the genre, but it fulfills its mission with a certain class, especially if you imagine it along a coastal road. A wise Japanese, sometimes too much so, but incredibly easy to live with.
