Overview
So, Suzuki decided to clear out its adventure bike closet. After years where the V-Strom 650 played the role of the reliable friend always available but a little too sensible, the Japanese manufacturer brought out the makeover brush in 2017. The result? A motorcycle that clearly wants to provoke its rivals, the Yamaha Tracer 700 and the Kawasaki Versys 650, with a look that no longer resembles a teddy bear. This new face, borrowed from the 1000, is a statement of intent: this trail now wants to be noticed.

The heart of the machine remains this faithful 645 cm3 V-twin engine, a powerplant that has proven itself for nearly two decades under the hood of the SV. To satisfy Euro4 and appease thrifty minds, Suzuki gave it a rejuvenation with 60 new parts. We find 71 horsepower at 8000 rpm, accompanied by 69 Nm of torque at 6400 rpm. That is sufficient to animate the 213 kg when fully fueled with good naturalness, but you can feel that the market is pushing towards larger displacements. This twin is an honest worker, not a firework display. Its true talent lies in its accessible torque and moderate consumption, allowing, with the 20-liter tank, stress-free journeys. For those looking for a used Suzuki V-Strom 650, this engine is often a major reliability argument.
The real revolution for this generation is the arrival, finally, of electronics. Traction control with two intervention modes becomes a safety net on capricious roads, even if its usefulness on a 71 hp machine can spark debate. More practical are the Low RPM Assist, which prevents stalling in town, and the Easy Start system. ABS is well present, and a 12V socket finds its place near the handlebars. The adjustable bubble on three tool-free positions is also a small daily victory. But Suzuki retains a frugal side: the center stand and luggage racks remain optional. For a more adventurous Suzuki V-Strom 650 XT, with its spoked rims and engine guard, these accessories are often integrated, as seen on the Suzuki V-Strom 650 XT 2022 or even the future Suzuki V-Strom 650 XT 2024 models.
On the chassis, the changes are more subtle. The aluminum perimeter frame and swingarm are carried over, proving that the base was already solid. The 43 mm fork and Tokico front brakes do the job without frills. The real gain comes from a slightly reduced weight and a tightening around the tank to improve contact with the 830 mm seat. The new dashboard, inspired by the big sister, is much more modern and informative. For the globetrotter or occasional traveler, this Suzuki V-Strom 650 becomes a more complete proposition.
So, who should look at this machine? The motorcyclist who wants a versatile, everyday, and touring trail bike, without the technical or price extravagances of the German models. Its Suzuki V-Strom 650 price of around 8400 euros places it in direct competition with the Japanese bikes. It doesn’t have the immediate appeal of a Tracer, nor the affirmed character of a Versys, but it gains maturity and equipment. For the beginner looking for a used Suzuki V-Strom 650 on the classifieds or the pragmatic globetrotter, it represents a safe and suddenly more stylish choice. Suzuki has finally given its mid-size trail bike the character it deserved.
