Overview
Do you remember that period, around 2006, when the large trail bike started to become a real phenomenon? The BMW GS models dominated the landscape, but their price and mass intimidated many. Suzuki, with its legendary practicality, then launched a brilliant response: take the iconic engine from the SV 650, graft it into a trail frame, and offer this Suzuki V-Strom 650 at a very reasonable price. The idea was simple, but the result was a small revolution for touring riders who didn't want to go into debt or carry a behemoth.

The first encounter with this machine can be surprising. With its 217 kg when fully fueled and its 22-liter tank, it has a physical presence, but as soon as you turn the key, the character changes. This 645 cc V-twin engine, delivering 67 horsepower and 63.7 Nm of torque, is a familiar acquaintance. It’s the heart of the SV, but here reworked for low and mid-range performance. The magic works instantly. The bike is light to handle, as agile as a road bike, and this 820 mm seat makes it accessible for most builds. Compared to a Transalp of the time, it offers more punch and immediate responsiveness. It’s a trail bike designed for those who spend 90% of their time on pavement, but who still have a desire for a bit of dirt road.
On the road, the Suzuki V-Strom 650 proves to be an exquisite companion. The six-speed gearbox is smooth, the engine pulls from 3000 rpm with a suppleness that allows you to ride without ever touching the gear selector. In tight corners, it leans with a disconcerting ease for a machine with high-profile tires. The aluminum frame and geometry give it a near-prodigious handling. However, Suzuki made choices. The suspension, with 150 mm of travel, is tuned for dynamic efficiency, not plush comfort. On a fragile back or on very degraded roads, it can remind you that you are on a "road" trail bike. The brakes, with two front discs, are effective without being brutal, perfectly suited to the spirit of the machine.
What makes the Suzuki V-Strom 650 strong, especially on the used market today, is its honest versatility. It’s not a track machine, but its adjustable windscreen (manually, of course) and range allow for real escapades. It’s not a pure sportbike, but its responsive engine and communicative chassis make the daily commute or a trip fun. It’s the perfect bike for the touring rider looking for a faithful companion, without extravagance or complexity, with robust mechanics and a purchase price, or a used Suzuki V-Strom 650, often very attractive. It doesn't seek to be the best, but to be the fairest, and in that role, it has been, and remains, a formidable success.
