Overview

Can you create a true trail bike, agile and accessible, without sacrificing character? Suzuki asked this question in 2010 with the V-Strom 650, and the answer was a stroke of genius. The manufacturer wasn't looking to revolutionize the segment, but rather to offer a credible and incredibly appealing alternative to the then-uncontested dominance of the BMW F 650 GS or the Honda Transalp 650. The bet was simple: take the legendary engine from the SV 650, this 90° V-twin known for its lively temperament, and insert it into a more civilized trail frame. The result? A machine that speaks directly to the novice touring rider or the experienced motorcyclist seeking a complication-free companion.

Suzuki V-Strom 650

Technically, the proposition is clear. With 67 horsepower delivered at 8800 rpm and a torque of 63.7 Nm available much lower, at 6400 rpm, the engine is reworked for the mission. The camshafts are modified, the rotating parts are made heavier, all to favor traction in the mid-range, where you live on the road. It’s less a demon of high revs than a quiet force, but still with that signature sound and that liveliness that made the Suzuki twin famous. The perimeter aluminum frame, identical in philosophy to the 1000, but with a seat height reduced to 820 mm, makes handling immediate. The wet weight of 217 kg is not a threat, especially with this pleasant power delivery. For around 6500 euros at the time, you got a complete motorcycle: manually adjustable screen, a rich dashboard, and even a dial adjustment for the rear shock absorber. Looking for a used Suzuki V-Strom 650 today remains an excellent entry point into the world of road trails, with a proven track record.

On the road, that’s where the magic happens. Compared to a Transalp, smoother and perhaps more "trail" in its appearance, the DL 650 reveals a sportier temperament. The transmission is precise, the six-speed gearbox works well with the engine, and the handling is excellent, almost prodigious for a machine with 19-inch tires at the front. It loves mountain roads, where you can open the throttle without restraint and enjoy this low-end pull that pulls with enthusiasm. It’s a motorcycle that doesn’t ask for a fight, it simply invites you to enjoy. However, Suzuki made choices. The suspension, with its 150 mm of travel, prioritizes efficiency and precision over absolute comfort. On a rutted path or for a sensitive back, this can become a point of attention. And it should be noted the absence of the 1000’s handguards, a useful accessory for cold weather or trails.

The audience for this V-Strom 650 is broad. It’s the perfect motorcycle for those who want to start on a trail without feeling overwhelmed, for the traveler looking for an agile and economical machine with its 22-liter tank, or even for the track rider disappointed by the rigidity of a pure sportbike. Later versions, such as the Suzuki V-Strom 650 XT with its protection equipment, have perfected the concept. But this 2010 generation laid the foundations for a philosophy: a trail must be competent on the road above all, and riding pleasure is non-negotiable. It’s not the most comfortable, nor the most powerful, but it’s probably one of the most consistent and enjoyable in its category. A cocktail of agility, character, and versatility that explains why, even today, searching for a used Suzuki V-Strom 650 on Le Bon Coin or elsewhere is a sensible endeavor.
