Overview

Can a motorcycle rest on its laurels for a decade and still remain relevant? That's the debate surrounding the 2016 Suzuki V-Strom 650. Here's a trail, or "super motard" according to the specs, navigating an ocean that has become much more aggressive. Faced with the BMW F 800 GS and Triumph Tiger 800, which redefined the segment with more bite and character, the Strom appears as a familiar acquaintance, a little too wise. Its evolution since 2012 is more of a facelift than a technical revolution, a strategy that raises questions when the competition is flexing its muscles.

Suzuki V-Strom 650

Visually, it plays the role of a gentle giant with this large headlight that gives it a friendly dinosaur look. The voluminous side plastics and the tank protection strip are meant to convey a sense of robustness, but the charm is a little too understated, too familiar. It's far from the adventurous trail that inspires dreams. The more compact dashboard follows this logic of discretion. Those seeking a Suzuki V-Strom 650 XT with a more assertive look and serious equipment should turn to later versions, such as the Suzuki V-Strom 650 XT 2022 or 2023, which have managed to add a bit of flair.

The heart, however, remains a tried-and-true old friend: the 645 cm3 V-twin engine. This engine, legendary under the tanks of the SV650, is slightly reworked here. Increased compression, revised camshafts, a softer clutch... Suzuki promises improved response in the mid-range and increased fuel economy. The 69 horsepower and 69 Nm of torque won't tear up the asphalt, but they deliver their power with exemplary progressiveness, perfect for a beginner or a touring rider who prioritizes serenity. The twin-spar aluminum frame and conventional suspension are safe bets, comfortable but not exhilarating. At 214 kg fully fueled and with a seat height of 835 mm, it remains accessible, even if its size isn't that of a lightweight.

That's where the problem lies. At nearly €8,000 new at the time, the proposition lacked bite compared to more exciting competitors. Today, looking for a used Suzuki V-Strom 650, perhaps on Le Bon Coin, becomes a very sensible idea. It's an indestructible machine, remarkably economical with its 20-liter tank, and versatile enough for the city or long highway journeys. The technical specifications of the Suzuki V-Strom 650 reveal an honest motorcycle, with no surprises.

Ultimately, this generation of V-Strom 650 is the archetype of a loyal but uninspired road companion. It will never let you down, but it will rarely make you shiver. Its audience? The pragmatic rider looking for a reliable, comfortable, and economical mount, a perfect tool for everyday use or travel without pretense. For those dreaming of a little more adventure in style, the XT versions, notably the used Suzuki V-Strom 650 XT 2019 or 2021, with their spoked wheels and equipment, will be more judicious choices. The base is solid, but it took Suzuki subsequent years and the arrival of models like the Suzuki V-Strom 650 XT 2024 to finally infuse it with the character it lacked so much.
