Overview
Does a trail necessarily have to be sensible to be effective? Suzuki, with the release of this updated V-Strom 650 in 2017, answers with a negative. The Hamamatsu firm had grown tired of seeing its machines perceived as gentle Swiss Army knives, facing off against the Yamaha Tracer 700 and Kawasaki Versys 650 which were capturing attention. It therefore decided to add character, and it shows. Farewell to the friendly curves, hello to a sharp look inherited from the larger 1000, with this unique headlight that divides as much as it marks the minds. It’s bold, almost aggressive, and clearly announces the color: this machine no longer wants to simply serve, it wants to impress.

Under this redesigned hood, the soul remains faithful to the good old 645 cm³ V-twin, a veteran from the SV 650 but carefully refreshed for the era. With 71 horsepower and 69 Nm of torque, the figures don't intimidate the competition, but that's precisely where its strength lies. This engine is a model of flexibility and reliability, delivering its power in a linear and predictable way, a true pleasure for the long-distance traveler or the daily rider. It devours the kilometers without stress, and with its 20-liter tank, autonomy is not an empty word. For those looking for a used Suzuki V-Strom 650, this engine is often a decisive argument, known for its robustness.
Where Suzuki has truly made a step forward is in the equipment. Traction control makes its entry, with two intervention modes and possible deactivation. On a trail of this power, some will scoff, but in wet weather or on gravel, it's a welcome safety feature. We also find launch assist, low-speed torque assist, and ABS, which is now essential. The dashboard borrows from the 1000, offering clear reading and complete information. On the other hand, Suzuki remains a little stingy on certain details: the center stand and luggage plates are optional, a questionable choice on a touring machine.
On the road, the Suzuki V-Strom 650 XT 2022 or previous versions confirm their reputation as an excellent companion. The chassis, although borrowed from the previous generation, offers reassuring stability and a certain agility thanks to a contained weight of around 213 kg fully fueled. The 830 mm seat may be intimidating, but the tapered shape of the tank helps to put your foot down. The suspensions, simple but effective, correctly absorb imperfections, while the brakes, without being sports weapons, offer good bite and progressive modulation. It is a motorcycle that inspires confidence immediately, whether you are a beginner looking for a reassuring first trail or an experienced traveler seeking a trouble-free machine.
So, has this third iteration succeeded in its bet? Yes, overall. It has gained character, equipment and modernity, without betraying the fundamental qualities that have made the V-Strom a success: versatility, comfort and legendary reliability. It will never be the craziest or the most luxurious in its category, but it constitutes an extremely rational and durable choice. For those who want a motorcycle ready for Monday’s work and weekend getaways, without breaking the bank on purchase or maintenance, the Suzuki V-Strom 650 new or used price remains a safe bet, an honest machine that does the job without frills.
