Overview

One might have thought the Suzuki V-Strom 650 was eternal. Launched in 2004, it has traversed the decades with the consistency of a metronome, embodying the quintessential all-terrain trail bike. In 2015, upon closer inspection, one can’t help but smile. Did the engineers at Hamamatsu spend these ten years polishing the same diamond, or simply waiting for the trend to return? Because the market has changed around it. The BMW F 800 GS and Triumph Tiger 800 have raised the bar, offering more technical, more stylish, more assertive machines. The V-Strom, on the other hand, evolves at a snail’s pace. Its 2012 transformation was a simple facelift, and this 2015 version struggles to hide its roots. Yet, on the used market, this longevity becomes a strength: a used Suzuki V-Strom 650 is a safe bet, a proven mechanical system whose every corner is known.

Suzuki V-Strom 650

Beneath the guise of a gentle giant, with that diplodocus-like gaze that draws so much comment, it hides a beating heart. The 90° V-twin engine with a displacement of 645 cm3 is a familiar acquaintance, originating from the Gladius and, before it, the cult SV models. Suzuki has slightly boosted it here, increasing the compression ratio to 11.5:1 and reworking the camshafts for more generous torque at mid-range. The 69 horsepower at 8800 rpm and 59 Nm of torque at 6400 rpm won’t pin you to your seat, but they deliver exemplary progressiveness. Consumption even shows a 10% reduction, a significant argument against a new price of €7999, which was considered reasonable. It is this legendary reliability and this modest maintenance cost that now drive the success of listings for a used Suzuki V-Strom 650 on Le Bon Coin. You buy a healthy base, a solid aluminum double-beam frame, and a simple-to-maintain chain drive.

But let’s admit it, faced with the competition, the compromise shows its limits. With a wet weight of 214 kg and a seat height of 835 mm, it remains accessible, but it lacks flair. The 43 mm telescopic fork and the single shock absorber, both with 150 mm of travel, are correct without being exceptional. The dual 310 mm front disc braking system does the job, assisted by ABS now standard. But where is the inverted fork, where is the riding mode, where is that little spark of madness that makes you swoon? Suzuki played it safe, adding an adjustable windscreen, refining the 20-liter fuel tank at the knee level, and lightening the whole assembly by a few kilos. The XT version, with its spoked wheels, its protections, and a more adventurous look, attempted to respond to this demand. Searching for a used Suzuki V-Strom 650 XT, particularly a 2019 or 2022 model, can be a trick to obtain more character without breaking the bank.

So, who is it for? The pragmatic globetrotter who travels 20,000 km per year without fuss, the urban rider who needs a tall and comfortable machine to dominate traffic, the reassured beginner with a docile and predictable mechanical system. It’s not the most exciting, nor the most capable off the beaten path, but it is incredibly sincere. Consulting the technical specifications of the Suzuki V-Strom 650 is reading the history of an engine that has proven itself, of a reliable chassis, of a philosophy of "just necessary." In 2024, as Suzuki offers updated color V-Strom 650 XT models, the spirit remains identical. A reasonable choice in a world of often overly excessive motorcycles. It may not make you dream in advance, but it will save you many mechanical nightmares. And in the long term, that’s sometimes what matters most.
