Overview

Does a trail always have to look like an oversized tractor, or can it retain a sporty soul? Suzuki, in 2005, answers with the V-Strom 650, a bold gamble consisting of grafting the legendary heart of the SV650 onto an adventurer's chassis. This isn't a machine for conquest, but a hybrid that primarily targets the road, with a touch of gravel for country lanes. Its original price, around €6500, placed it in direct competition with the Honda Transalp 650, but with a significant advantage: approximately 15 extra horsepower and a much sharper character.

Suzuki V-Strom 650

The initial contact is one of disarming simplicity. With a 820 mm seat height and an announced weight of 217 kg fully fueled, it doesn't intimidate. The size is less imposing than that of the 1000, and handling is intuitive. The secret lies in its engine, this 90° V-twin of 645 cc, reworked for the V-Strom 650. Suzuki has weighted the moving parts and modified the camshafts to boost torque, which reaches 63.7 Nm at 6400 rpm. The power, 67 hp at 8800 rpm, is not staggering, but its power curve is a model of mechanical pedagogy. In town or in the mountains, this machine is sumptuous. The twin pulls from low RPM, pulls with impressive flexibility through fourth gear, and you never have to fight with the six-speed gearbox. It's a motorcycle that lets you enjoy yourself, without ever tiring you.

On paper, the technical specifications of the Suzuki V-Strom 650 may seem modest compared to its larger competitors. But on the road, its perimeter aluminum frame and tire fit (110/80 front, 150/70 rear) reveal agility that borders on that of a sportbike. The handling is excellent, even prodigious for a trail. However, Suzuki made choices. The suspension, a 43 mm fork and a mono-shock, have a limited stroke of 150 mm. They prioritize efficiency and control over pure comfort. On a fragile surface or on degraded roads, this can become a point of friction. The brakes, two front discs of 310 mm and one rear disc of 260 mm, are effective without being aggressive, perfectly suited to the machine's philosophy.

Who is it for? The novice or experienced touring rider looking for a versatile machine, capable of trips with its 22-liter tank, but also of urban commutes without suffering. The manually adjustable screen and the complete dashboard are serious assets. Looking for a used Suzuki V-Strom 650 today, on Le Bon Coin or elsewhere, remains an excellent idea for a first large trail. Later versions, such as the Suzuki V-Strom 650 XT with its additional protections, have refined the concept. But this first generation laid the foundations for an intelligent motorcycle, which does not sacrifice pleasure for practicality. It is not the most comfortable, nor the most adventurous, but it is probably one of the most balanced and playful in its category. A rare cocktail.
