Overview

Does a mid-size trailbike necessarily have to be sensible? Look at the competition: the Yamaha Tracer 7, the Kawasaki Versys 650, even the Honda CB500X. They are all polished, predictable, almost too reasonable. Then comes this Suzuki V-Strom 650, with its quirky, aggressive bird-like face borrowed from its larger thousandcc sibling. It stands out, and that’s a good thing. Suzuki understood that you have to shake the coconut tree to make a place for yourself in an ultra-competitive sector. The design may not be perfectly harmonious, but it has the merit of existing and proclaiming that this motorcycle does not intend to go unnoticed.

Suzuki V-Strom 650

Under this revised hood, the faithful 645 cm³ V-twin engine resists. It has been around since the SV650 era, and that’s a strength: a proven, reliable mechanical unit. With 71 horsepower and 69 Nm of torque, it doesn’t break any raw power records, but it delivers its force with exemplary generosity in the low and mid range. That’s where its character lies: you don’t seek the thrill of the top of the rev counter, but the quiet efficiency of an engine that pulls as soon as you open the throttle. It has been retouched for Euro4, gaining a bit of pep and sobriety. For a road-going trailbike, it’s exactly what’s needed. Its only real flaw? In a world where 700 and 800 cm³ engines proliferate, its displacement starts to seem small on paper, even if, on the road, the torque is well present.

Where Suzuki has really made a leap forward is in the electronic equipment. We finally have adjustable traction control on the V-Strom 650. Is it essential on a 71 hp motorcycle? On dry pavement, a good rider can do without it. But in dubious weather, on greasy roads, or for a touring rider loaded down, it’s a welcome safety feature. It operates with two intervention modes and can be switched off. We also find modern extras like launch control, one-button start, and ABS, of course. The dashboard is now borrowed from the 1000, much more readable and complete. On the other hand, Suzuki remains a little stingy with the rest: the center stand and suitcase mounts are optional. For a touring trailbike, it’s a little short.

The chassis, for its part, evolves gently. The aluminum perimeter frame is retained, as is the 43 mm telescopic fork and the Tokico brakes. Nothing transcendent, but everything is solid and predictable. The announced weight is 213 kg fully fueled, which places it in the lower-middle range of its category. The 830 mm seat is accessible, even if those with short legs will appreciate used versions where a low seat was often an option. The 20-liter tank promises good range, perfect for travel. For those who want a more adventurous style, you will need to turn to the Suzuki V-Strom 650 XT version, with its spoked rims and engine guard.

So, who should buy this Suzuki V-Strom 650? The pragmatic touring rider looking for a reliable, comfortable machine for long distances, and now equipped with electronics worthy of the name. It’s an excellent motorcycle for swallowing up asphalt in complete serenity, more than one for playing at being off-road adventurers. Its price of €8399 is competitive. On the used market, a Suzuki V-Strom 650 XT 2019 or 2022 often represents an excellent value for money for a first trailbike. It doesn’t have the madness of a Tiger Sport, nor the prestige of a BMW F 750 GS, but it has a certain character and proven robustness. It doesn’t make you fall in love at first sight, but it is worth getting to know, kilometer after kilometer. A safe bet, finally modernized.
