Overview
They thought it was buried, this SVS 650, disappearing from French catalogs in 2010. But Suzuki, in a flash of lucidity, resurrected it in 2016. No question of reinventing the wheel, just of offering again a recipe that had proven its worth. Because yes, the Suzuki SVS 650, especially in its early versions like the 1999 or 2004 SVS 650, forged the reputation of an accessible, lively, and devilishly friendly motorcycle. The 2016 return is a bit like reconnecting with an old friend: he hasn't changed his suit, but the complicity is still there.

Faced with modern competition, the Yamaha MT-07 in the lead, the SV 650 S displays a style that smells of the 2000s. Its Suzuki SVS 650 fairing is simple, almost spartan, and its single black paint job goes unnoticed. For around 5600 euros new at the time, the price of a Suzuki SVS 650 was intended to be a massive argument. Today, searching for a used Suzuki SVS 650 remains an excellent plan for a tight budget. But don't be fooled: beneath this wise appearance beats the heart of a real little demon.
The 90° V-twin is the soul of the beast. With 74 horsepower at 9000 rpm and a well-felt torque of 63.7 Nm, it doesn't have the crushing power of a 4-cylinder, but it has character. It responds instantly, likes to be solicited, and emits a percussive sound that makes you want to play with the gear lever. The position, with its half-handlebars, announces a sporty color without being punitive, an ideal compromise for the road or a daily commute. It is here that the technical specifications of the Suzuki SVS 650 reveal its true audience: the motorcyclist who seeks simple and immediate pleasure, without complications.
The cycle part, however, recalls that we are not on a pure sportbike. The trellis frame is agile and predictable, but the somewhat soft suspension is clearly calibrated for comfort and quiet rides. They admit their limits if you push the pace in corners. The brakes, 290 mm discs at the front with two-piston calipers, do the job correctly without being weapons of war. This is consistent with the spirit of the motorcycle: efficient, reassuring, but not track-ready.
So, what are the opinions on the Suzuki SVS 650, whether it's the 2009 model or the 2016 version? It is an honest machine, which does not cheat. It does not claim to pulverize lap times. It instead offers authentic riding pleasure, reliable and cheerful mechanics, and disarming ease of use. It is the perfect motorcycle for a novice who wants to grow quickly, or for an expert who wants to rediscover raw sensations. Its flaw? Its discretion. Its major quality? The smile it puts on your face with every throttle opening. A safe bet, simply.
