Overview

The Z 650 wants to be sporty. It evolves into the Z 650 S. A slightly more aggressive version, which allows this flagship model to be refreshed. It adopts a unique approach to ergonomics, with repositioned footpegs, a new wide fat bar handlebar configuration, as well as improvements to the rider and passenger seats.

The new, more forward-leaning riding position is complemented by a revised seat, more comfortable and approximately 20 mm higher than that of the previous Z650. The overall seating area is wider, while the passenger seat gains 20 mm in width and benefits from 10 mm of additional padding. A Style seat and an ERGO-Fit seat lowered by 20 mm are part of the wide range of accessories available.

With its face inspired by the Z 900, the Z 650 S exudes the impression of a more imposing machine. The new fairings reinforce this feeling of robustness, followed by a triple-optic LED front lighting system. The rear light and turn signals are also LED.

The Z650 S aims to seduce with its refined details, such as the elegant aluminum radiator guards that underline its premium character. At the rear, its compact and raised silhouette, with sharp lines, adopts a bold design that reinforces its dynamic and menacing allure. Subtle metallic accents add a high-end finish, affirming the attention to detail and quality of design.

The Z650 S doesn't just offer a new riding position and a handlebar widened by 30 mm: it also integrates a new 4.3-inch TFT dashboard (also inspired by the Z 900) that displays all essential information while automatically adapting to ambient light to offer the best possible readability.

The display can be switched between two modes: the first presents a bar-graph tachometer, while the second offers a modern-design hexagonal tachometer. The wallpaper automatically changes from white to black in low-light conditions, or can be adjusted manually according to the rider's preferences. Furthermore, this dashboard serves as an interface with the Kawasaki Rideology smartphone app, offering access to a wide range of connected features.

Despite its S character, the Kawa offers no technical changes to its chassis. Regarding the engine, the 649 cm3 twin cylinder has been revised to improve low-end torque. Its power (68 horsepower) and maximum torque (6.5 mkg) have not changed. It therefore essentially plays its additional appeal on style and on-board life but not on performance; although agility should benefit from the new ergonomics. Regarding assistance, we find traction control, a new ABS from Continental, and optionally a quickshifter (up-shifts only). The weight is up, by 2 kilos.

Regularly, the Z 650 evolves with small touches. This S version does not deviate from the rule. More visually toned, it can also count on its willing and versatile engine, but which lacks character, especially facing an MT-07, and power if put up against a 750 Hornet. Many people would like to see a Z 750 with a 270° block and still Kawa in its veins. And you?
