Overview

Can the Japanese V2 truly rival the raw charm of a European twin? In 2007, Suzuki answers with the SV 1000, a machine attempting to channel the wild soul of the former TL 1000 S into a more civilized setting. This is far from a simple enlargement of the 650; it’s a completely rethought philosophy. With its 120 horsepower and 98 Nm of torque from a 996 cm3 V2, the promise is clear: to offer the sensations of a large twin without the crippling flaws of its distant and nervous ancestor.

Suzuki SV 1000

Initially, the riding position is surprising. With an 80 cm seat height, you feel perched, almost like on an old-school sportbike. The design, angular, breaks with the sensual curves of the first SV 650. But once underway, the Suzuki SV 1000 engine immediately recalls its origins. This V2 pulses, growls, and delivers its power with a generosity that is sometimes lacking in overly refined four-cylinder engines. From the mid-range, the torque is there, supple and direct, propelling the motorcycle without apparent effort. This is where the interest of a Suzuki SV 1000 engine lies: intuitive propulsion, less temperamental than that of the old TLS, but still just as communicative. Faced with a Honda VTR 1000 or a Ducati Monster of the time, the Suzuki plays the card of accessibility and regularity.

However, all is not perfect. From the first corners, a small detail is irritating. The steering damper, a technical legacy intended to calm the ardour, manifests as a slight resistance to engagement. You quickly get used to it, and it even proves useful when you start to load it, but this initial sensation slightly weighs down the handling. The chassis, with its tubular frame and adjustable suspension, is generally effective and precise, but it requires a little more authority than on a more neutral machine. This is the price to pay for mastering the 186 kilos dry weight of this Suzuki SV 1000. On the other hand, the brakes are a pleasant surprise, offering bite and feel that are nothing to envy to the competition.

So, who is the 2007 SV 1000 for? Clearly for the demanding touring rider seeking the sensations of a large twin without the harshness of a purely sporty machine. It is easier to live with than an Aprilia RSV Mille, more temperamental than a Honda Hornet 900. Its 17-liter tank and riding position allow it to cover the distance, even if the firm seat can become uncomfortable in the very long term. Today, searching for a used Suzuki SV 1000 represents an opportunity to acquire an exceptional engine at a reasonable price, well below equivalent Italian twins.

The SV 1000 doesn’t fall into your lap like its little sister 650. Its charm is more subtle, more adult. It doesn’t seek to impress with crazy numbers or a flashy design. It seduces with its coherence, its meaty engine, and its balance between liveliness and stability. It’s not the most spectacular showpiece, but it’s a reliable and deeply endearing road companion, which makes you understand that power is nothing without character. A lesson that Suzuki had already masterfully illustrated.
