Overview
Can a motocross bike afford to stagnate when all the competition is making significant progress? That’s the risky bet Suzuki is taking with its RM-Z450, which seems to be evolving at a different pace, almost out of sync. At nearly €9,400, it displays a serious price tag for a machine that, on paper, retains its fundamentals. Its dry weight of 112 kg and its 449 cm3 single-cylinder engine delivering 60 horsepower place it in the big leagues, but with a particularity that is striking: the Suzuki RM-Z450 is the only 450 motocross bike not equipped as standard with an electric starter. A detail? On uneven terrain, after a fall, this absence weighs heavily, literally and physically. It embodies a pure and hard, almost retro, side that will appeal to nostalgic riders of direct mechanics, but could deter those seeking ease of use.

However, let’s not be mistaken, this machine hides sophisticated electronics where we least expect it. Its S-HAC system, dedicated to starts, offers three maps to adapt to the terrain, from dirt track to concrete. It is a valuable, intelligent tool, which contrasts with the absence of a starter. The engine, revised on the intake and injection, promises a more linear torque curve and a crisp response. Combined with the standard MX Tuner 2.0 unit, which allows for fine tuning of the injection and ignition via smartphone, the machine becomes customizable to the extreme. We are far from the supposed archaism. The chassis, with its refined aluminum perimeter frame and lightweight swingarm, aims for agility and precision in corners. The Showa suspension, with its BFRC rear shock derived from the GSX-R, focuses on control and comfort.
So, who is the target rider for this RM-Z450? Certainly not the beginner, frightened by the kick and the liveliness of a 450. It is a weapon for the diligent practitioner, the club rider who lives for the track, ready to sacrifice a little convenience for a sensation of mechanical purity. It is aimed at those who like to adjust, refine, and who consider kick-starting as a ritual. Faced with competitors such as the KTM 450 SX-F or the Yamaha YZ450F, crammed with electronics and modern comfort, the Suzuki stands out as an independent. It reminds us that motocross, before being a matter of gadgets, is a story of feeling and raw connection with the machine. Its price, €9,399, is it justified without the electric starter? That’s the big debate. For some, it’s an unacceptable shortcoming in 2024. For others, it’s the price to pay for preserved authenticity.
