Overview
The Suzuki RM-Z450 remains unchanged for 2025. Suzuki focuses on the essentials: being a motocross bike that must perform three vital tasks – move forward, turn, and stop – and display tires as effective as any other. The last major overhaul dates back to 2018. However, the RMZ will suit a wide range of users. And the RM-Z 450 can boast 26 national and world championships won, including five AMA 450 motocross titles and two AMA 450 supercross titles. To this track record is now added a completely redesigned engine, chassis, and electronic system, along with a proven aesthetic.
The result? A RM-Z 450 that is more powerful, more balanced, and more competitive than ever.
For a blistering start
A ‘good start’ is more than determining in MX. Here’s what the Suzuki Holeshot Assist Control (S-HAC) offers. The updated S-HAC system, with 3 levels, is an integral part of the RM-Z 450’s electronic system. This system evaluates throttle position and gear selection and adjusts ignition timing to optimize engine output for a quick start. All of this is managed at lightning speed, without driver intervention – a brilliant feat of motocross engineering. By interpreting throttle and gear position, the S-HAC constantly modifies timing to maximize power delivered during the three critical start stages, including: the exact moment of the start, the gate drop, and acceleration on the first straight. Regardless of the rider, track conditions, or the nature of the starting block – dirt, mud, or concrete – the S-HAC automatically adapts to provide the fastest and most powerful thrust possible. Six seconds after the start, the system returns ignition timing to normal operation or when the rider shifts into fifth gear or when the throttle is closed, giving the rider enough time to launch from the gate to the first turn. The S-HAC version of this RM-Z 450 offers the rider a choice of three configurations, easily selected via a switch mounted on the handlebar. Mode “A” is designed for hard surfaces like a concrete starting block, clay, or packed dirt, where preventing wheelspin is essential for a good start. In 2018, the algorithms of mode “A” were updated to provide even finer control for the rider when opening the throttle and an improved sensation of traction during the critical moments of the initial start. Mode “B” is the mode suited to normal dirt conditions. Riders can also select the “Off” setting to maintain standard ignition timing.
Power across the range
In motocross, you must launch immediately – exiting the gate and in turns – and descend slopes at a blistering pace. To provide a stronger winning balance to riders, the redesigned engine’s torque of the RM-Z 450 is lower, with a generally flatter torque curve, faster and more easily controlled throttle response, and higher peak power. All of this is linked to a complete range of changes to the intake and fuel system. Inside the airbox, the opening of the air filter is now widened by 30% for better airflow, and a style MXGP mudguard helps divert mud and dirt to better preserve the engine. The airbox-to-fuel injector block exhaust pipe is also straighter, reducing intake resistance for more power across all RPM ranges. Similarly, the throttle body has been revised and now provides a more homogeneous air-fuel mixture, further increasing power while ensuring a smooth acceleration feel. Higher fuel pump pressure reinforces the air-fuel mixture for better response, and the elimination of throttle coupling improves acceleration feel. The injector fuel spray path is now directed upwards to directly reach the throttle valve for a more efficient explosion. The shape of the intake port has been updated for better swirling charge flow into the cylinder, boosting power at all engine speeds. The shape of the intake port matches the profile of the high-lift camshaft, further increasing intake efficiency and engine output. In the combustion chamber, a piston rib design adds strength and durability to meet the higher engine output. The muffler ensures compliance with the latest regulations on sound levels.
Maximum traction
The RM-Z 450’s electronic systems work seamlessly with the rider to divert power to the ground. To maximize traction, the engine control module (ECM) automatically adjusts ignition timing and fuel injection based on throttle position, engine speed, and gear ratio. The first RM-Z 450 traction control system debuted in 2008, and the second generation arrived in 2013. Now, the ECU within the RM-Z 450’s third-generation traction control system processes data 1.6 times faster and offers 2.5 times more memory capacity than the first-generation system.
Mastering corners
The Suzuki RM-Z 450 offers the rider a sharper handling feel, clearer sensations, and better control than ever. The lightweight swingarm significantly improves performance in corners, whether sliding along a berm or diving into an inside line. The fork tube has been recessed by 10 mm, resulting in a 1480 mm wheelbase and more weight distributed forward for increased agility and stability. At the chassis level, improvements include a more rectangular cross-section of the main spars, improved front-rear stiffness, and optimized overall stiffness with a weight reduction of 700 g. All of this directly enhances cornering performance as well as impact absorption and stability. The swingarm revision includes thinner materials for a 100 g weight reduction and optimized stiffness, which translates to improved performance and stability in corners. Further chassis upgrades like hexagonal-type rails at the subframe increase airbox capacity and stiffen the assembly while having slimmer dimensions to allow space for the Showa Balance Free Rear Cushion rear shock. At the riding position, the straighter Renthal Fatbar aluminum handlebar helps riders shift their weight forward to better take corners. Finally, a lighter chain guide provides more uniform contact and improved durability, while the water pump and magneto cover are protected by an engine shroud.
Enhanced suspension
The Showa front and rear suspension provides better rider response and terrain tracking. It absorbs forces better, enhances chassis stability and terrain feel, and offers more comfort. The rider benefits from better control, faster lap times, and less fatigue under demanding training or racing conditions. At the front, the previous-generation RM-Z 450’s SFF-Air fork has been replaced by an updated Showa coil spring fork. It offers comfortable usability for a wide range of customers. The upper triple clamp is also lighter with optimized dimensions. At the rear, the Showa Balance Free Rear Cushion (BFRC) shock is based on the same technology as the GSX-R 1000 R sportbike, which balances pressure above and below the piston to better control the stroke and thus dampen reactions to bumps and ruts, even when braking hard.
Wheels and tires
Lightweight wheels and Bridgestone tires maximize grip to improve agility and control under a wide range of different track conditions. With a black finish giving a factory look, the wheels have an optimized cross-section that maintains strength while reducing critical rotational mass by 70 g in total. The bike is supplied with Bridgestone Battlecross X30 tires of the latest generation.

MX Tuner 2.0
Because good track performance requires precise tuning of your machine, Suzuki now offers MX Tuner 2.0 as standard on the RM-Z450. Developed in collaboration with GET, MX Tuner allows for optimal injection tuning via an app to be downloaded on a smartphone or tablet. By default, four types of maps are offered to the user, allowing for easy changes in settings and serving as a basis for the user following their skills and preferences.
Injection and ignition maps have a 36-point adjustable range to best match the rider's style: from -10% to +20% for injection, and from -12 to +3 degrees for ignition. This information is sent to the RM-Z unit in a wireless communication when you connect it to an exclusive coupler installed on the machine and powered by a 12V battery.
