Overview

The Hayabusa. That name is like a punch in the face of reason. We’re not talking about a motorcycle here, but an incarnated myth, a symbol of speed that has become cult since its appearance in 1999. The last redesign, in 2008, had frozen its features for a decade. But the 2014 model we are scrutinizing here is the ultimate evolution of this generation, the one that finally received the Brembo monoblock calipers it deserved. Because with a weight of 266 kg fully fueled and an official top speed flirting with 310 km/h, braking becomes a sport in its own right. ABS, welcome, is there to prevent excesses of this overpowered mechanics.

Suzuki Hayabusa

Its heart, a 1340 cc inline-four, doesn’t do lace. 198 horsepower at 8500 rpm and 152 Nm of torque from 4000 rpm. These figures are not promises, they are facts. They propel you into a world where acceleration becomes a brutal physical sensation, where the available torque from the mid-range sticks you to the seat relentlessly. Compared to other hyper-sport touring bikes, the Hayabusa doesn’t play at being delicate. It imposes its law, its mass, its presence. It’s a locomotive, not a scalpel.

The dashboard, with its scale limited to 280 km/h, is almost a joke. A wink to the legends of the early models that displayed much more dizzying figures. For nostalgics of the 1999 Hayabusa or those looking for a more modern 2021 Suzuki Hayabusa, this 2014 version represents a point of balance. It combines the original mechanical terror with late refinements like the Brembos and ABS. It’s the end of an era, robust and imperfect, before the arrival of more recent models like the new 2022 Suzuki Hayabusa.

Its audience? It’s not the beginner’s bike, nor the pure track bike. It’s the tool of the globetrotter who wants to cross continents at the speed of a missile, or the collector who wants to own a fragment of history. With a nearly 21-liter tank and a 805 mm seat height, it can cover distances, but its weight makes it less agile than a pure sportbike. It is a specialist, not a generalist.

Today, with a new price then set at €15,499, it is mainly found on the used market. Searching for a used Suzuki Hayabusa, perhaps on Le Bon Coin, is the path for many. And for lovers of extreme madness, there are even Suzuki Hayabusa turbo versions, transforming this already excessive platform into a true projectile. But the standard version, the 2014 one, remains the essence of the concept: a brute, unequivocal force that doesn’t ask if you’re ready, but prepares you for it.
