Overview
Do you remember the first time you saw a Hayabusa? Not in a photo, but in person. That aesthetic shock, that otherworldly silhouette, that feeling that classical physics had just been defied. The 2006 version is the pinnacle of this concept, before regulations imposed electronic restrictions. With its 175 horsepower and 138 Nm of torque, it doesn’t just swallow asphalt, it recycles it. Its 1300 cm3 inline-four engine is a mechanical work of art, with deceptive smoothness at low RPM that transforms into a hallucinatory surge past 8000 RPM. Flat out in second gear, you’re already flirting with 190 km/h, and your driver's license is nothing more than a distant memory. It’s this excess that forged its legend, making the search for a used Suzuki Hayabusa a quest for many.

Yet, mounting this 250 kg monster when fully fueled holds a surprise. The position, although leaned forward, remains far from the torture rack of pure supersports. The aluminum twin-spar frame and fully adjustable suspension work miracles. In a curve, its weight seems to vaporize, and it launches with agility that has nothing to do with its wheelbase of nearly one meter fifty. It will never have the liveliness of a 600, but for an engine built for the straight line, it handles remarkably well. The drawback? This 120 mm ground clearance that makes the footpegs and fairing scrape as soon as you take a bit of angle on the track. It’s the price to pay for its stealth aircraft aerodynamics.
Because that’s what it is: a ground-to-ground airplane. Its maximum speed of around 317 km/h was a record at the time, but this quest has left its mark on ergonomics. Pilot protection is minimal. From 160 km/h, you become a parachute, and the high bubble becomes a necessity, not an option, for any slightly long ride. The braking, although powerful, lacks a bit of bite and feedback at the entry of the phase, a Suzuki characteristic of the time. On the other hand, the gearbox is a delight of precision, a real knife through butter.
So, who is this motorcycle for? Certainly not the beginner, nor the urban rider seeking smoothness. It’s the mount of the demanding globetrotter who wants to cover crazy distances at a frantic pace, and the track rider looking for a raw and historic sensation. Today, with the arrival of the new Suzuki Hayabusa 2021 and its 2022 and 2023 versions, more civilized and electronically assisted, the 2006 represents the era of mechanical purism. Its new price was €13,299, but searching for a used Suzuki Hayabusa on the classifieds is now acquiring a piece of history. A history that smells of hot oil, gasoline, and fear mixed with ecstasy. It’s a motorcycle that doesn’t ask if you’re ready, it lets you know. And that’s why we love it.
