Overview

The world of motorcycles has known legends, but none has ever defined the notion of pure speed with the same arrogance as the Suzuki Hayabusa. Launched in 1999, it was immediately the ultimate weapon, the machine that smashed the 300 km/h barrier and forced other manufacturers to sign a non-aggression pact. The 2004 version we discuss here is this very icon, slightly refined, but still that land missile whose silhouette remains an aerodynamic provocation. Today, much is said about the new Suzuki Hayabusa 2021 or 2023, more civilized and electronic, but returning to this 2004 is a salutary reminder: it was a motorcycle built for a single purpose, linear domination.

Suzuki Hayabusa

Its heart is an inline four-cylinder engine of 1299 cm3 delivering 175 horsepower at 9800 rpm and a torque of 138 Nm at 7000 rpm. These figures, at the time, were a declaration of war. The engine is a monster of versatility: docile and supple at low revs, it transforms into a demonic fury as soon as the tachometer passes the 8000 rpm zone. The comparison with its contemporaries, such as the Honda CBR1100XX Blackbird, is undeniable: the Hayabusa possesses a brutality, an expressiveness in the high revs that leaves the competition in a gentleman's role. Accelerations and in-gear acceleration are intoxicatingly violent, the breath seeming inexhaustible. Exceeding 190 km/h in second gear was not a metaphor, it was a daily reality for its riders, with an official top speed of 317 km/h. One crucial detail for buyers of a used Suzuki Hayabusa: even restricted to 100 hp for the French market, this engine remains a treat thanks to its colossal torque.

However, riding this 217 kg dry weight (250 kg fully fueled) beast is not a punishment. The aluminum twin-spar frame and fully adjustable suspension are a work of magic. We're not talking about the agility of an R6, but the bike sways with a disconcerting lightness, its weight disappearing thanks to a studied geometry and the gyroscopic effect of its massive engine. In a straight line, it is a ground-to-air aircraft; in corners, it is a liner that responds with an impressive serenity. The downside of this medal is limited ground clearance. On the track, in a bleeding attack, the footpegs and fairing scrape the tarmac. On the road, its wheelbase of 1485 mm makes it less agile than a supermotard in tight hairpins, but you make up for it in the next one… if you still have your license.

Because that is the paradox of this Hayabusa. It is both a record machine, accessible to the brave road rider thanks to its relative comfort (805 mm seat, suspension that filters well), and an absolute trap for the pink slip. The aerodynamic protection, optimized for maximum speed, is negligible; from 160 km/h, the rider fights against the wind. A tall screen was an almost obligatory Suzuki Hayabusa 2021 accessory for long journeys. And the braking, powerful but without the initial bite characteristic of Suzuki models of this era, requires anticipation. The six-speed gearbox, however, remains a model of precision and smoothness.

Who should consider a Suzuki Hayabusa 2004 today? The collector, the nostalgic of pure speed, or the road rider looking for a unique machine, with an unparalleled character. The new price was €13,299; today, the Suzuki Hayabusa price on the used market varies depending on condition and history. It is an investment for a raw experience, without the compromises of the new generations. Compared to a Suzuki Hayabusa 2023, smoother and electronically tamed, the 2004 is a reminder that excess, sometimes, was simply the goal. It was not perfect, it was excessive, and that is precisely why we loved it.
