Overview

When Suzuki decides to step onto the bagger playing field, people pay attention. The segment, dominated outright by Harley-Davidson and to a lesser extent by Victory or Kawasaki, leaves only crumbs for Japanese manufacturers in the European market. Yet with the 2014 C 1500 T Intruder, Hamamatsu is rolling the dice. The recipe is well known: take a cruiser base, bolt on hard saddlebags and a generous windshield, and you get a machine built to eat up tarmac without rushing. On paper, the gamble is clear. On the road, it's a different story.

Suzuki C 1500 T INTRUDER

The V-twin pulsing beneath the 18-liter tank is no stranger. This 54-degree, liquid-cooled, 1462 cc V-twin with its long-stroke bore and stroke of 96 x 101 mm comes from the defunct M 1500 Intruder, whose career was as brief as it was forgettable. Here, it puts out 79 horsepower at 4,800 rpm — modest output, but consistent with the philosophy of the genre. What really matters is the torque: 128.5 Nm available from just 2,600 rpm. That's the real selling point of this engine. Every surge of acceleration comes with a deep rumble, effortlessly, the shaft drive and five-speed gearbox delivering power with metronome-like regularity. You ride on torque, not revs. Top speed caps out at 180 km/h, a figure nobody will bother chasing on this kind of mount.

The C 1500 T's silhouette plays the discretion card. No ostentatious chrome, no aggressive lines. Everything is dark, almost stealthy for a cruiser of this bulk. The integrated saddlebags blend into the bodywork without breaking the flow, the windshield promises effective protection against highway turbulence, and the seat, low at 720 mm, welcomes the rider into a feet-forward riding position, planted on wide floorboards. A cruising rhythm sets in naturally. You don't rush this Suzuki — you go with it.

Then comes the awkward question: how much does a Suzuki C 1500 T Intruder weigh? The answer makes you wince. 363 kg wet is an anvil. And to slow that mass down, Suzuki fitted just a single front disc with a two-piston caliper, paired with an identical setup at the rear. That's a far cry from the seriousness of a Road King with its dual front discs. At low speed, parking maneuvers become a strength-training exercise. At a brisk pace on twisty roads, you'd better anticipate every braking point with a comfortable margin. The steel double-cradle frame and conventional suspension — telehydraulic fork and single rear shock — deliver predictable handling, but nothing more. The 200/60-16 rear tire plants the machine to the ground with authority.

The killer argument for this Japanese bagger is its price. At 13,499 euros in 2014, Suzuki positioned the C 1500 T well below any touring-equipped Harley-Davidson. For a rider who dreams of long, relaxed cruises without mortgaging the garage, the proposition is tempting. The compromises are real, particularly on braking and weight, but the V-twin's generous torque and riding comfort partly make up for them. It's neither a sportbike nor a tourer — it's a rolling armchair on two wheels designed for long straightaways and sunsets. Tight-corner enthusiasts need not apply. Everyone else will find an honest road companion here, sold at a fair price.
