Overview

When Suzuki decides to play on bagger territory, it naturally turns heads. The segment, dominated for decades by Milwaukee's machines and a few outsiders like Victory or Kawasaki, didn't really seem to be waiting for a new player. And yet, the Hamamatsu firm showed up in 2013 with its C 1500 T Intruder, a custom tourer built to devour tarmac without breaking a sweat. A proposition that, on paper, has plenty to attract those eyeing America without wanting to empty their bank account.

Suzuki C 1500 T INTRUDER

The foundation is nothing new. Suzuki took the architecture of the M 1500 Intruder, a machine whose dealership run was as brief as a British summer, and turned it into a fully equipped tourer. Hard saddlebags, a generous windscreen, a wide seat and forward-set footpegs that practically graze the engine cases: everything is designed for long-distance travel, at a pace nobody would call sporty. The seat height, kept down to 720 mm, inspires confidence at a standstill and makes maneuvering easier. Because maneuvering there will be. What does a Suzuki C 1500 T Intruder weigh? No less than 363 kg fully fueled, including the 18-liter tank. That's a good 100 kg more than a standard naked bike. At this level, every U-turn in a parking lot becomes a weightlifting exercise.

Beneath that dark, understated bodywork beats a 54° V-twin displacing 1462 cc, liquid-cooled and fed by dual-throttle-body fuel injection. The spec sheet announces 79 horsepower at 4800 rpm, which won't make anyone tremble. But on a bagger, outright power matters less than torque availability. And here, Suzuki's V-twin plays its hand with conviction: 128.5 Nm available from just 2600 rpm. At low revs, the machine pulls without complaint, regaining cruising speed with a simple twist of the wrist. The shaft drive, paired with a five-speed gearbox, reinforces this laid-back vocation. No chain to lube, no tension to check: you climb on and ride.

The sticking point is the braking. A single front disc with a two-piston caliper to rein in 363 kg is on the light side. At the rear, same setup. When a Harley Street Glide comes equipped with dual front discs, the Suzuki's provision looks stingy. Top speed caps out at 180 km/h, which will be more than enough for the intended riding profile, but deceleration phases under load—saddlebags full and a passenger on board—will demand anticipation. The steel double-cradle frame and generous tire fitment, with a 200 mm rear, do however provide reassuring straight-line stability.

Then there's the argument that changes the game: the price. At 12,999 euros in 2013, the C 1500 T positioned itself as the most affordable bagger on the market, well ahead of the prices Harley-Davidson charged for its touring models. For a rider drawn to long-distance jaunts, a Sunday cruising enthusiast, or simply someone curious to taste bagger culture without mortgaging the garage, this Intruder Touring offered a credible entry point. Not the most refined, not the best-braked, but honest in its proposition and solid on its mechanical foundations.
