Overview
Take a maxi-trail weighing 230 kg, 100 horsepower delivered at 8000 rpm and 103 Nm of torque available from 4000 rpm, then slap on a tank bag and hand guards as a "urban pack": the idea invites a smile. Yet Suzuki embraces it unapologetically with this Urban variant of the 1000 V-Strom, and in a way, the logic isn't all that absurd.

The V-Strom 1000, in its base version, is a well-balanced road trail. Its 90° L-twin 1037 cc engine runs smoothly, its twin aluminum frame eats up the miles without complaint, and its 160 mm travel suspension swallows potholes without lecturing you. The 43 mm inverted fork and rear mono-shock are calibrated for mixed asphalt, not dirt tracks. That's not a flaw — it's a philosophy. With an 850 mm seat height, average-sized riders will need to adjust, but the weight manages better than it looks once you're moving.
What Suzuki does with the Urban pack is dress a versatile tool for a specific purpose. The 5-to-9-liter expandable tank bag addresses one of the few genuine criticisms of the V-Strom line: the lack of quick-access storage. The center stand, often absent on trails of this displacement, simplifies daily life — whether for chaining the bike or simply keeping it stable when stopped in the city. The hand guards, meanwhile, protect against urban wind chill as much as minor handlebar scrapes. Nothing revolutionary, but coherent.
The real question is positioning. At €12,899, the price is reasonable for a one-liter machine in 2014, but the competition is fierce. The BMW F 800 GS is lighter and more agile in the city. The Honda CB500X, while less powerful, threads through traffic more easily. And if urban use is truly the priority, a mid-displacement trail will cover 90% of needs. This Urban pack therefore targets a specific profile: the long-distance rider who lives in the city, heads out on open roads at the weekend, and wants a single motorcycle for everything. For that user, the 20-liter tank and the broad torque spread of the V-twin make sense even between two sets of traffic lights.
Suzuki also offers the same chassis in Adventure and Tourer versions, which says a great deal about the machine's true vocation. The Urban is not a casting error — it's simply the most restrained version of a motorcycle built to devour kilometers. If you're looking for a purely urban trail, look elsewhere. But if the city is just a waypoint on a longer journey, this V-Strom proves surprisingly practical once equipped.
