Overview
Forty years calls for more than cake. Kawasaki understood this well, and to mark the Ninja lineage's half-century minus ten, the green firm broke out the paintbrushes across nearly its entire catalogue. The Ninja 1000 SX inherits a livery that is anything but subtle: a deep blood-red flame slashing across the fairing from side to side, framed in deep black with a few restrained grey pinstripes along the upper section. Some will recognize this motif immediately. It is a direct reinterpretation of the 1984 GPZ 900 R — the motorcycle that started it all, the one that gave the Ninja its mythical status before the word was ever overused.

The 40-year count deserves an explanation, as it raises a fair question. The original GPZ 900 R was born in 1984, not 1985. What Kawasaki is celebrating here is the 1985 model year livery, not the birth certificate. The "40 Years Ninja" emblem engraved on the tank settles the debate without appeal. Whatever the arithmetic detail: the spirit of the "Firecracker Red & Black Ebony" is here, and it makes an impression. That sharp red against an ebony backdrop is exactly the visual provocation that accompanied Tom Cruise in Top Gun — an era when Japanese sportbikes were rewriting the rules of the game against a European scene that was still taking itself too seriously.
This revival did not come from nowhere. In late 2021, at the final round of the WSBK, Alex Lowes' ZX-10R Factory wore a decoration very close to this livery, while Jonathan Rea's machine echoed the codes of the old ZXR 750 Stinger. Kawasaki was testing the waters, gauging the temperature. The response was evidently favorable, as the entire 2024 Ninja range has followed suit, each according to its own character: pure sportbikes with the Stinger tribute, faired roadsters with the red and black of the early years.
Beneath this ceremonial livery, the Ninja 1000 SX remains what it has been for several generations: a sport-GT built to devour kilometers without sacrificing riding pleasure. Its 1043 cc inline four-cylinder produces 142 horsepower at 10,000 rpm and 110.8 Nm of torque at 8,000 rpm — figures that place the machine in a seriously muscular register without tipping into hypersport excess. The 235 kg wet weight is within segment norms, the 835 mm seat height remains accessible for a rider of average build, and the 19-liter tank makes genuine long-distance stages a realistic proposition. The claimed top speed of 250 km/h is electronically limited, as with the competition.
At €15,649 for this anniversary edition, the premium over the standard version remains modest. This is where Kawasaki scores points against certain manufacturers who turn a special livery into a financial operation. The Z 650 RS 50th, the Z 900 RS 50th, and several other models in the range followed the same logic in 2022 and 2024: a few hundred euros more for an edition that means something, not double the price for a different sticker. The target audience is clearly the nostalgic forty-somethings who grew up with GPZ posters on their bedroom walls, alongside touring riders looking for a versatile machine with a strong character. The Ninja 1000 SX 40th Anniversary speaks to those who want to ride far, ride fast, and not go unnoticed. With this red and black, the last point is guaranteed.
