Overview
Thirty-six years of Superbike, and Suzuki never missed a season. Not one. Since 1988 and the first grids of the World Championship, the Hamamatsu brand has weathered everything: Ducati's crushing dominance, the Honda years, the up-and-down results, and that crowning moment in 2005 with Troy Corser on top of the world. Names have marked this blue-and-white epic, from Biaggi to Kagayama, from Chambon to Guintoli, right through to Laverty. It is within this heritage that this limited edition finds its place, born from the partnership between Suzuki France and the Crescent Voltcom team.

In 2014, Alex Lowes and Eugene Laverty carry the colors of this British team based in Verwood. Their GSX-R 1000, sharpened by Paul Denning, makes waves on circuits where considerably more recent machines struggle to keep up. Because the paradox of the big Gex is exactly that: an aluminum perimeter frame that is starting to show its age against the Aprilia RSV4, BMW S 1000 RR, and Kawasaki ZX-10R, and yet an inline four-cylinder engine still producing 185 horsepower at 11,500 rpm, with 116.7 Nm of torque available at 10,000 rpm. Figures that many recent sportsbikes would be proud to display. The six-speed gearbox, the 45 mm inverted forks, the Brembo brakes with their radial calipers biting on 310 mm discs — everything combines to make a machine that has not had its last word on track.
Suzuki France decided to immortalize the 2014 season by producing exactly 24 replicas for the French market. Each machine leaves the factory in standard form, then travels to England to Denning himself, who oversees the transformation. You receive a racing livery matching that of the championship machines, a Yoshimura R-77J titanium exhaust with its carbon end cap, GB Racing engine covers, a painted seat cowl, and an engraved numbered plate. The visual difference from a standard GSX-R 1000 is limited to the mirrors, the swingarm, and the stock forks, where the real Superbike runs Öhlins FGR units — a detail only the connoisseurs will notice at first glance.
The price does not go unnoticed: 16,999 euros. That is 2,900 more than a standard GSX-R 1000, for a titanium exhaust, a signature paint scheme, and an engraved plate. The question is legitimate: is it worth the premium? For someone buying a sportsbike to ride, the answer is probably no. The 203 kg wet weight, the 810 mm seat height, and the claimed 300 km/h top speed make this a demanding machine, resolutely aimed at an experienced rider who knows what they want. For the championship history enthusiast, the one who has followed the Crescent seasons closely, it is a different matter entirely. Twenty-four examples for France is few. Fewer than a limited run of luxury watches.
One can smile at the marketing argument, point out that the GSX-R 1000 is showing its age against technologically fresher competition, note that 2,900 euros of difference for cosmetics is steep. But it would be dishonest to deny the appeal of the object. A GSX-R identical to Laverty's championship machine, prepared by the racing team itself, with its 185 horsepower available to those who know how to find them: there are worse ways to spend your money. Twenty-four people in France will have their serial number. Everyone else will watch.
