Overview
Who, in 2021, can still claim to sell a naked bike at nearly 15,000 euros banking solely on looks? MV Agusta, obviously. With the Dragster 800 Rosso, the Varese factory plays a simple card: offering the most direct access to its iconic three-cylinder engine, without the frills or the price tag of the RR. The Rosso suffix doesn't denote a limited edition but rather the entry ticket into the range. A single livery available, red and black, with unapologetic cosmetic concessions. The removal of the belly pan, the switch away from spoke wheels, and a few downgraded finishes help keep the bill in check. Compared to a Triumph Street Triple RS or a Yamaha MT-09 SP, the price positioning remains steep, but we're talking about an Italian machine with a racing pedigree that looks like nothing else in a parking lot.

Nestled within the tubular steel trellis frame sits the 798 cc inline three-cylinder engine with counter-rotating crankshaft, shared across the entire Rosso family. Power output is set at 112 horsepower at 11,500 rpm, with 83 Nm of torque available from 7,600 rpm. Figures that show a slight improvement thanks to Euro5 compliance, which also required a new exhaust with a bolder design. The engine weighs just 52 kg on the scales, and the MV Agusta Dragster 800 Rosso tips in at 168 kg dry. In the world of middleweight nakeds, that's a compelling argument of weight — or rather lack thereof — that few rivals can match. The Street Triple R, the segment's benchmark, carries a few extra kilos.
The 2021 update goes beyond the mechanicals. The electronics take a leap forward with the MVICS 2.1 platform: a 5.5-inch color TFT display, Bluetooth and GPS connectivity, four engine maps, traction control linked to an inertial measurement unit, Continental MK100 cornering ABS, and a third-generation bidirectional quickshifter. A cruise control rounds out the package. For a machine with such a radical temperament, this electronic suite puts the MV Agusta Dragster 800 Rosso 2020/2021 on equal technological footing with Japanese bikes sold for considerably less. The chassis, a hybrid of aluminum plates and steel trellis, features redesigned frame plates to fine-tune the balance between longitudinal rigidity and torsional flexibility. The 43 mm Marzocchi inverted fork and Sachs shock are adjustable for preload, rebound, and compression. The Brembo brakes — dual 320 mm discs up front with radial-mount four-piston calipers — are beyond reproach. The 200 mm rear tire underscores the machine's aesthetic ambitions as much as its dynamic ones.

Let's be honest: the Dragster has never been a fundamentally different motorcycle from the Brutale 800. Same technical foundation, same engine, same rolling chassis give or take a few details. What changes is the attitude. The chopped hot rod-style tail, the lofty 845 mm seat height, the handlebar with risers adjustable across three positions to sharpen the sporty character of the cockpit. The 16.5-liter tank and a claimed fuel consumption of 5.6 l/100 km limit range to around 290 km. Not enough to contemplate grand touring, but the MV Agusta Dragster 800 Rosso isn't aimed at long-distance riders. It targets the urban and suburban motorcyclist — the one who wants a thrill machine on twisty weekend roads and an object of fascination during the week. The short 1,400 mm wheelbase and 135 mm ground clearance confirm this calling: agility and responsiveness over highway stability.
At 14,900 euros, the price tag remains steep for an entry-level model, but that's the cost of Italian exclusivity. The Dragster Rosso delivers the essence of the MV Agusta experience without the mechanical and financial escalation of the RR. A Brutale with a perfectly executed angle grinder treatment, built for those who choose a motorcycle with their eyes as much as with their wrists.
