Overview

Who still remembers the Stelvio? Hardly anyone, and that's probably for the best. When Moto Guzzi decided to return to the adventure bike arena with the V85 TT, the Mandello del Lario brand wasn't looking for a rematch. It changed the ring entirely. No point going head-to-head with the BMW R 1250 GS, a machine that has sat on the throne for decades. Taking on the KTM 790 Adventure or the Ducati Multistrada would be equally suicidal. The Moto Guzzi V85 TT plays a different tune — that of a neo-classic adventure bike that embraces its transalpine heritage without apology. It draws from the DNA of the old NTX models, claims direct lineage to the V 65 TT of the 1980s, and offers a cocktail that nobody else in the segment is serving.

Moto Guzzi V85 TT

Beneath the 23-litre tank beats a longitudinal 853 cc V-twin, a pushrod architecture with two valves per cylinder that Guzzi has been refining for ages. The engine comes from the V9 family, but it underwent a serious overhaul: lightened crankshaft, titanium intake valves, compression ratio pushed to 10.5:1, and throttle bodies widened to 52 mm. The result is 80 horsepower at 7,750 rpm and 80 Nm of torque from 5,000 rpm, with 90% of that torque available from just 3,750 rpm. It's no speed demon — top speed caps out at 200 km/h. But the character lies elsewhere, in that frank, linear surge of power, in that V-twin rumble that reminds you with every twist of the throttle that you're not riding a Japanese motorcycle. A detail that matters for long-term Moto Guzzi V85 TT reliability: final drive runs through a shaft, a nearly unique solution in this displacement category. Where the Tiger 800, F 750 GS and V-Strom 650 rely on chains, the Guzzi runs without grease and without chain tension adjustments. A genuine selling point for anyone looking at a used Moto Guzzi V85 TT without wanting to worry about drivetrain maintenance.

The Moto Guzzi V85 TT spec sheet reveals a steel trellis frame where the engine serves as a stressed member, saving weight and stiffening the whole structure. The 41 mm inverted fork and the laterally mounted rear shock offer decent travel for a dual-purpose adventure bike, adjustable for rebound and preload. Braking is handled by Brembo with radial-mount four-piston calipers up front on twin discs — serious hardware. The spoked wheels fitted with 19-inch front and 17-inch rear tyres, three riding modes (Road, Rain and Off-Road), traction control, and switchable ABS confirm that the Moto Guzzi V85 TT test ride can also extend onto dirt tracks. The seat height of 803 mm remains accessible, and 210 mm of ground clearance allows for off-road detours without too many scares.

Moto Guzzi V85 TT

At 229 kg wet, the V85 TT is no featherweight. Yet it falls right within the segment norm. The claimed fuel consumption of 4.9 litres per hundred kilometres hints at a theoretical range exceeding 450 km — a solid asset for the Moto Guzzi V85 TT Travel version and long road trips. The colour TFT display, two USB ports and adjustable windscreen round out a rather generous standard equipment list. Moto Guzzi V85 TT luggage, from the top case to the side panniers, is readily available as OEM accessories or aftermarket options. As for Moto Guzzi V85 TT reviews, feedback converges: the engine is endearing, the riding position natural, the enjoyment immediate. Issues reported on the earliest model years mainly concern a somewhat rough gearbox and a few fit-and-finish details that could be improved — points Guzzi has progressively addressed on the 2021 and 2022 versions.

Moto Guzzi V85 TT

Priced at €11,699 in 2020, the Moto Guzzi V85 TT positions itself below premium adventure bikes without sacrificing character or equipment. It isn't aimed at track riders or extreme overlanders, but at motorcyclists who want to stand out, ride differently, and enjoy old-school mechanics dressed in modern technology. On the second-hand market and in dealerships alike, it attracts riders who've had enough of cookie-cutter adventure bikes. That's its strength, and probably its limitation: the V85 TT is a motorcycle of conviction before it is a motorcycle of reason.
