Overview

When a French brand decides to step out of the ranks of unpretentious small-displacement machines and play in the yard of serious retro roadsters, you wait to see. Mash did it, with the Five Hundred, a 397 cc single-cylinder that never hid its desire to tickle references like the Yamaha SR 400. The overhead-valve engine, the double steel tubular cradle frame, the 27 horsepower delivered at 7,000 rpm, the 151 kg dry weight: everything is calibrated for accessible, almost contemplative use. But accessible does not mean anonymous, and Mash has visibly decided to prove it.

Mash 400 Five Hundred Von Dutch

The Von Dutch label applied to this vintage roadster is a surprising choice. The brand, emblem of American customizing culture in the 2000s before being absorbed by streetwear culture, no longer carries its former shine. Yet on this pared-down chassis with its deliberately retro aesthetic, it finds an unexpected coherence. This is not a sponsor slapped hastily onto a fairing: it is a complete staging. The chocolate-brown livery, the saddle crafted by an artisan saddler, the leather belt, the leather-wrapped instrument covers — details that transform a limited edition into an object of desire for those who know how to look. At €6,490, it is far removed from the base price of the standard Five Hundred, and the difference is justified precisely by this care brought to each hand-dressed piece.

The transition from the EICMA 2014 prototype to the production series required some compromises, but the concessions remain measured. The front fender is now present — it was absent on the prototype — but it remains height-adjustable, which preserves some character. The rear fender is retractable. Beyond that, the Von Dutch does not settle for the bare minimum: license plate mounted directly to the headlight, a straight cross-bar handlebar, heat wrap on the exhaust headers, Ariete grips, Metzeler Karoo 2 tires in 100/90-19 at the front and 110/80-18 at the rear, not forgetting the specific graphics on the 13-liter tank. It is a coherent assembly, each element reinforcing the machine's identity rather than simply ticking marketing boxes.

Mechanically, no one will come looking for circuit thrills here. The 29.90 Nm of torque peaks at 5,500 rpm, top speed is capped at 140 km/h, and the 5-speed gearbox does its job without fuss. Drum brakes front and rear fit the retro tone, but they serve as a reminder that this motorcycle is made for Sunday morning rides and leisurely passages through small towns, not for tackling alpine passes in the rain. That is its natural territory, and within that register, the whole package is coherent.

Limited to 200 units with 100 destined for the French market, the Von Dutch targets a specific audience: the vintage motorcycle enthusiast who wants something rare without mortgaging their house, who appreciates genuine leather and artisanal craftsmanship, and who cares nothing for roll-on comparisons on the ring road. Against the Yamaha SR 400 — more expensive and even rarer — or the European neo-retros that climb above €8,000, the Mash holds its own on singularity and price. The reputation is not yet there, the proof remains to be made over time, but the intention is present, and it is well executed.
