Overview
What does a motorcycle look like when you let passionate artisans redesign an icon? The answer, in its Portuguese version, is called the SR 400 Zen. It’s not just a custom bike; it’s a radical reinterpretation signed by the workshop it roCkS!bikes, in collaboration with Yamaha Portugal and the magazine Motociclismo. They took the timeless base of the SR 400, this understated and square single-cylinder engine, to create a contemporary flat tracker with a well-defined character.

The first impact is visual. The Portuguese team simply erased the classic separation between the tank, seat, and rear section. The result is a monocoque fairing that wraps around the frame, a signature that has become the trademark of the workshop. This streamlined and unique silhouette has even earned it the local nickname "bacalhau," a playful reference to salt cod, a star of Lusitanian tables. It’s bold, consistent, and it works. It’s far from the fashionable classic customs, it’s a work of art in its own right.
Beneath this sculptural bodywork, the mechanical work is just as serious. The frame has been extensively reworked to follow the monocoque line. At the rear, say goodbye to the two traditional shock absorbers, making way for a unique cantilever system with a homemade tubular swingarm. It’s technical, clean, and contributes to the visual lightness. The 399 cm³ single-cylinder engine remains original in its block, but breathes better thanks to a revised intake and a custom-made stainless steel exhaust. The original 23 horsepower should gain responsiveness, even though we remain within values of flexibility and torque, with 27.5 Nm available from 3000 rpm. It’s not a rocket, it’s a characterful engine, preserved for its soul.
Who is made to ride this rolling work of art? Certainly not the novice or the Sunday rider. With its monocoque tank and exposed mechanics, it’s a motorcycle for the informed collector, for the enthusiast of unique parts who has the €7500 of its new price in hand. It’s a mechanical sculpture that can be ridden, a tribute to flat track that puts everything on style and pure sensation. Compared to that, a Triumph Bonneville or a Honda CB400 seem almost conventional.
The Zen is therefore much more than a customized Yamaha SR 400. It’s proof that with talent and vision, a classic base can be transformed into a radical and desirable object. It won’t please everyone; its price and exclusivity make it a niche object, but it strikes with its consistency and impeccable execution. A bacalhau that has punch.
