Overview
When a brand revives its past glories, it plays a risky game. Jawa, a Czech two-wheeled legend, took the gamble with this 350 OHC Special, a café-racer with an overtly retro look that glances towards the circuits of the Continental Circus of the 50s and 60s, an era when riders like František Šťastný carried the colors of Prague in European Grand Prix races.

The visual result is honest, even seductive. The compact silhouette, the careful two-tone paint, the spoked rims, the conical exhaust pipes, the front fairing all in curves, and the single-seat with its backrest: the café-racer recipe is applied with care. The low handlebars under the fork headstock complete the scene. For €4,650, you buy both an object and a machine, and in this area, the Special does not disappoint.
Things get complicated under the bodywork. Behind the Czech badge hides a Shineray-sourced engine, a Chinese manufacturer that developed this 397 cc single-cylinder from Honda XR 400 plans. Result: 27 horsepower for 31.4 Nm of torque available from 5,000 rpm, all limited to 130 km/h maximum speed. The five-speed gearbox and chain transmission do the job, without particular ambition. This engine runs on quiet pleasure, not on adrenaline. With 167 kg dry weight, the Special remains manageable, but this figure betrays seven kilos more than the standard 350 OHC, the price to pay for the additional equipment and the front disc brake with ABS.
This Czech-Chinese mix inevitably raises a legitimate question for connoisseurs of the brand. Jawa built its reputation on in-house two-stroke twins; here, we are at the opposite of this DNA. The adoption of Euro4 standards and the presence of ABS prove a real desire to exist on the European market, but the absence of official distribution in France makes the exercise theoretical for most readers. Buying a 350 Special also means accepting a certain solitude when it comes to servicing.
The Jawa 350 OHC Special is aimed at an urban and nostalgic audience, sensitive to retro aesthetics and not in a hurry to overtake on the highway. Faced with a Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 or a Honda CB350, it struggles to defend a convincing value-for-money ratio, especially since its industrial origin seriously dilutes the promise of authenticity. What remains is a charming silhouette and an accessible entry price for those looking for a showcase café-racer rather than a road tool. A Jawa façade, as beautiful as a manufactured memory.
