Overview
When Honda pulled the curtain on the Varadero 125, no one really stepped up to take over. Major manufacturers are looking elsewhere, and the road trail accessible with an A1 license has remained a desert populated by a few brave brands: Orcal with its Tabor, Rieju with the Aventura, Benelli and its BKX, Zontes and its Hyper Trail. It is within this handful of contenders that the Montana XR1 Evo from Macbor plants its flag, with an ambition that far exceeds its engine displacement.

The suffix "Evo" deserves a quick explanation. The Montana XR1 has been running in Spain since 2017, underwent a redesign in 2023, then met Euro5+ standards before crossing the Pyrenees. This is therefore not a naive machine that we are discovering, but a motorcycle that has solidified its settings over time. The past counts, and in this case, it is Spanish. It should also be said that under the Macbor fairing lies mechanics from Zongshen, the Chinese giant, whose Cyclone RX1 serves as a base. Spanish engineers have customized the suspension and injection settings to give it its own identity, which distinguishes it from a simple rebadged import.
The engine, for its part, plays by the rules of the genre without trying to cheat. A four-stroke, 124 cc, single-cylinder engine, liquid-cooled, double overhead camshaft, four valves per cylinder, a compression ratio of 12:1. It develops 14.9 horsepower at 9,500 rpm and a torque of 10.8 Nm at 7,500 rpm, figures quite representative of the segment. The six-speed gearbox completes the picture. On the road, this engine provides flexibility for daily commutes and is sufficient to swallow up national roads, with a top speed announced at 110 km/h. Where the shoe pinches is the weight: 179 kg fully fueled, it is a serious load for a 125. An important nuance, this figure includes the three panniers as standard, which changes the perspective but does not eliminate the bulk in use.

And this standard equipment is precisely what makes the Montana XR1 Evo difficult to ignore. For 3,499 euros, the buyer gets side panniers and a top case, front and rear crash bars, a USB socket, a center stand, spoked wheels, a five-inch color TFT screen, an engine guard, three-mode ABS and switchable traction control. No direct competitor offers such a list at this price. The 37 mm inverted fork with 120 mm of travel and the adjustable preload rear mono-shock complete a kit that would make much more expensive models blush. The braking, two discs with modular ABS, remains within the standard without being impressive.

The reservations are real but circumscribed. The original-fit CST tires do not inspire absolute confidence and will probably need to be replaced quickly. The ground clearance is measured, which prohibits any serious off-road escapades despite the machine's adventurous looks. A regular passenger will solicit the single-cylinder beyond its intentions. These are the natural limits of a well-equipped 125 rather than an authentic trail bike. The Montana XR1 Evo is clearly aimed at young riders with an A1 license or riders in A2 training who are looking for a versatile motorcycle, presentable for a weekend with luggage, without emptying their current account. In this specific niche, it really has no rival at its height.
