Overview

Who could possibly need 190 horsepower on a naked bike? KTM clearly isn't asking the question. With the Superduke 1390 R EVO, the Austrian manufacturer pushes the envelope even further into unapologetic excess. Its 75° V-twin climbs to 1350 cc, delivers 145 Nm of torque from 8000 rpm, and propels the machine to a top speed of 290 km/h. Against a Ducati Streetfighter V4 or an Aprilia Tuono, the KTM plays a different tune: fewer cylinders, but a raw, almost primal engine character that shakes you to your core with every twist of the throttle.

The jump from 1290 to 1390 isn't simply a displacement increase. KTM revised the intake, reworked the fifth and sixth gearbox ratios, enlarged the tank to 17.5 liters to push back the reserve light a little, and grafted winglets on either side of the radiator. The tubular steel trellis frame has been slightly modified, and the brake and clutch master cylinders now feature automatic bleeding. Also noteworthy is the arrival of Michelin Power GP tires in 200/55 at the rear, a fitting choice for a machine that flirts with the limits of grip on every acceleration. All of this comes at a steep price: 23,399 euros. You read that right.

The EVO suffix, at KTM, designates the integration of third-generation WP semi-active suspension. The 48 mm inverted fork and the rear shock feature magnetic valves controlled by an electronic unit that adjusts damping in real time based on road surface and riding style. Five base modes are available, from Comfort to Sport. The optional Suspension Pro pack unlocks two additional modes, Track and Pro, along with an Anti-Dive system that stabilizes the bike's attitude under hard braking. The cherry on top: a Factory Start device inspired by MotoGP, which lowers the rear to optimize traction off the line. This level of technology was found only on racing machines barely five years ago.

Braking relies on Brembo Stylema calipers in radial mount on 320 mm discs. This is serious hardware, benchmark-level equipment found on the sharpest sportbikes on the market. The single-sided swingarm, carried over from the previous generation, contributes to the aggressive look of the whole package. On the electronics side, traction control and anti-wheelie come as standard, with the option to finely adjust their intervention levels. Three riding modes configure the overall behavior, expandable to five for those who tick the options boxes.

Then there's the sore point: weight. At 201 kg dry, the Superduke 1390 R EVO has put on some mass compared to its predecessor. For a naked bike that aims to be radical, it's a paradox. The Tuono V4 does better on the scales, and so does the Streetfighter V4. KTM compensates with a power-to-weight ratio that remains formidable and a seat perched at 834 mm, ensuring good clearance to attack corners with confidence. This machine is clearly not aimed at beginners or casual Sunday riders. It targets experienced riders, those who want a naked bike capable of giving sportbikes a run for their money on track while remaining usable on the road. At this price and with this firepower, the KTM Superduke 1390 R EVO plays in the premier league of premium hypernakeds, without hang-ups or compromise.
