Overview

The big fighter in the K series proved to be a significant step in the detuning of a BMW “new generation.” The firm, considered the most road-oriented, bourgeois, and conservative by some, had just delivered the most powerful roadster in the world. With 163 hp and a stunning face, the K 1200 R feared nothing and no one. With this road monster, the HP2 Sport, the K 1200 S missile, and the future S 1000 RR, no one looked at BMW the same way. But Japan reacted. The title of supreme power roadster has now passed to the Suzuki 1300 B-King. Its enormous power will allow it to keep this title for a while. In Munich, they didn’t seek to surpass it; they refined, improved, and retouched the K series, and here is the replacement for the big German beast: the K 1300 R.

Larger engine, more power, more weight. By increasing displacement, the K 1300 R also gained 6 kg, totaling 243 kg fully fueled. This added bulk is compensated by 10 extra horsepower and 1 mkg of torque, especially between 2,000 and 8,000 rpm. With its 173 hp, the new K is ranked #2 on the podium of the most powerful naked bikes on the market.

The 4-cylinder engine increased from 1,157 cm3 to 1,293 cm3 across all 3 K models simultaneously. Only the power varies slightly depending on whether it is installed in the S, R, or GT. But in each engine bay, the figures are proudly on the rise. To match its roadster character, the K 1300 R adopts a shorter final ratio than the 1300 S to boost acceleration. The increased torque doesn’t come solely from the increase in displacement: look at the exhaust… Yes, it’s shorter, but that’s not it. A valve is integrated into the exhaust to manage the outgoing gas flow and modulate the sound of the appendage. Briefly, a BMW EXUP.

At the level of geometry and agility, the longer wheelbase is compensated by the more pronounced inclination of the Duolever front fork. The 180 tire is retained while the spring and damper rates have stiffened. By selecting a few options, you can add ESA II to adjust the suspension with a touch. And if you like sport, you can boost the new selection mechanism with the HP2 Sport shifter, or even change the dashboard for the 2D digital combined instrument of the same 1200 HP2, as on the sport-GT K 1300 S. For more comfort, the handlebar of the roadster is borrowed from the K 1200 R Sportcar decoupled from any vibration. Japanese-standard commodos are also added.

Not dramatically noticeable but nevertheless revised, the look of the K 1300 R reinforces its aggressiveness. A more robust lower fairing, redesigned scoops and a fender, white turn signals, a slightly more menacing look, that's what continues the momentum of the 1200. There is, of course, a range of options to perfect the K 1300 R, including the following list. We are not giving you the price, in order to avoid intoxication.
