Overview

When KTM decides to swap a 7 for an 8, you might expect a simple cosmetic exercise. The reality packs more punch than that. The 2021 KTM 890 Adventure picks up the torch from a 790 that didn't even have time to age, but it does so with a compelling argument tucked under the tank: a thoroughly overhauled twin. Bore and stroke move to 90.7 x 68.8 mm, displacement climbs to 889 cc, and the figures land at 105 horsepower at 8,000 rpm with 100 Nm of torque at 6,500 rpm. In a segment where the 100 hp mark has become the price of admission, the KTM positions itself above what Triumph and BMW offer with their midsize adventure bikes. The crankshaft, 20% heavier, delivers welcome smoothness and better traction on broken terrain. This is an engine that doesn't just put numbers on a KTM 890 Adventure spec sheet — it translates them into real-world sensations.

KTM 890 Adventure

Visually, don't bother looking for differences with the 790: the silhouette remains identical, the 20-liter tank keeps its signature shape, and the desert-insect face hasn't moved a millimeter. The seat, still height-adjustable, tops out at 850 mm. The tubular chromoly steel frame, which uses the engine as a stressed member, hasn't been touched either. KTM considers the recipe works and leaves it alone. Worth noting, however, are the 196 kg dry, a few extra kilos compared to the predecessor. It's not a deal-breaker, but on a KTM 890 Adventure off-road test, every kilo counts when you need to pick the bike up after a slide on a Provençal trail.

On the suspension side, the 43 mm WP APEX fork retains its 200 mm of travel but remains devoid of adjustments. It's the WP APEX rear shock that steps up, adding rebound adjustment on top of preload. For those wanting to push further into the dirt, the KTM 890 Adventure R and its R Rally variant offer sharper suspension and equipment built for demanding trails. The 21- and 18-inch spoked wheels confirm the adventure-ready calling, while braking relies on dual 320 mm discs with four-piston radial calipers up front and a single disc clamped by a twin-piston Brembo caliper at the rear. The lean-angle-sensitive ABS can be partially deactivated via an Offroad mode that cuts it on the rear wheel. A detail that changes everything once you leave the tarmac.

KTM 890 Adventure

The onboard electronics follow the current trend: three riding modes, recalibrated traction control, engine brake control, and a 5-inch color TFT display. A configurable Rally mode is available as an option, along with a quickshifter, the KTM 890 Adventure comfort seat, heated grips, and an Akrapovic exhaust. Cruise control? The switch is right there on the handlebar controls, but you'll need to open your wallet to activate it. Typical of KTM, the options list inflates a bill that already starts at €13,399. That's a KTM 890 Adventure price sitting in the upper-mid range of the segment, but the standard equipment and twin's performance justify it. For A2 license holders, a restricted version is also available, broadening the potential audience. On KTM 890 Adventure forums, opinions converge: the mechanical improvement over the 790 is tangible, fuel consumption stays reasonable at 4.5 l/100 km, and the range from the 20-liter tank allows for long legs without range anxiety. Whether you're after a versatile road bike or a machine capable of venturing onto trails, the 890 Adventure ticks the boxes with very Austrian efficiency. It remains to be seen how the 2022 and 2023 model years of the KTM 890 Adventure will evolve the formula, and whether the used market will make this machine even more accessible.
