Overview
In 2008, if you wanted a true 600 pure race machine, the one that makes the pits vibrate and speaks the language of lap times, you didn't need to look far. Kawasaki, in a salutary sweep, had just said goodbye to its ZX-6R 636, that sympathetic bastard too road-friendly for purists. Exit the compromise, place for rigor. The manufacturer therefore concentrated all its energy on this single and unique track beast, the ZX-6RR, a machine that only smiles beyond five figures on the tachometer. With its 125 horsepower delivered at 14,000 rpm, it brings you back in line: here, we don't joke about revs, we exploit them.

The heart of the matter is this 599 cm3 inline four-cylinder engine reworked for the occasion. Engineers polished the intake ports and played with the bore and stroke to extract a little more flexibility at mid-range, without ever betraying the soul of a supersport. Torque, 65.7 Nm, arrives at 11,700 rpm, which means you have to know how to dance with the six-speed gearbox to make it sing. But when the engine revs up, it transforms into a veritable scalpel, sharp and precise, propelling its 167 kg dry weight towards a horizon that flirts with 260 km/h. The perimeter aluminum frame and the 41 mm inverted fork ensure a frank dialogue with the asphalt, for those who understand that language.
Compared to its contemporaries, the Honda CBR600RR or the Yamaha YZF-R6, the Ninja displays a character that is perhaps less accessible, more demanding. It doesn't make gifts, it requires technique and commitment. Braking, with its two 300 mm radial-mount discs, is brutally efficient, in the image of the beast. The 820 mm seat installs you in a combat position, reserved for the supple and the motivated. This is not a motorcycle for riding around the block, it is a performance tool that finds its meaning in tight corners and long straight lines where you dare to lean.

Who is it for then? Clearly for the confirmed track rider, for whom the pursuit of the lap time is a reason to live. The sporty touring rider, on the other hand, may miss the 636 and its more generous low-end torque. For 10,499 euros, you bought less a road bike than a circuit base, a platform of formidable efficiency. Its qualities are those of a precision weapon: lightness, high-mounted power, impeccable handling. Its flaws are the reverse of this medal: a radical ergonomics and an engine that demands to be constantly revved. The 2008 ZX-6RR was the return of 600 purism, a reminder that in this segment, passion is often measured in revolutions per minute.
