Overview
The 2005 Kawasaki ZRX 1200 R is something of a last of the Mohicans, a roaring declaration of love for an era when roadsters were starting to overthink things. With 122 horsepower and 104 Nm of torque, this large 1160 cm3 inline-four doesn’t mess around. It’s a brute of an engine, inherited from the ZZR 1100 but boosted, which explodes between 6000 and 9000 rpm with a vehemence that is no longer found today. At low rpm, it grumbles, then it explodes. The right-hand grip is a switch for thrills, and the displayed top speed of 230 km/h is just an administrative figure. What matters is how you get there.

But this Kawasaki ZRX 1200 R is not a motorcycle for beginners. With 251 kilograms when fully fueled and a massive stance, it commands respect before you even start it. Yet, in the city, it proves surprisingly civilized, the steering being light despite the wheelbase of 1466 mm. It’s only on a winding road that its character becomes complex. The frame, with its superb cast swingarm and 43 mm cartridge fork, is fully adjustable. An asset, and a headache. Finding the right balance between comfort and handling is an art, especially when the asphalt degrades. It’s not the most agile of roadsters; you have to ride it with conviction, but it holds its line with reassuring authority.
At the brakes, the two front discs gripped by six-piston calipers are of formidable efficiency, capable of taming the 122 horses without a flicker. But let's be honest, the real pleasure isn't in braking, it's in acceleration. This engine is pure drug, and you find yourself winding up the gears of its five-speed gearbox just to feel that endless surge. That’s its reason for being. The riding position is typically roadster, slightly forward, comfortable for the rider, but the passenger is sacrificed with footrests that are too high. As for the semi-fairing of the S version, it offers correct protection, but this motorcycle is not a tourer. The 20-liter tank offers just adequate range, and vibrations at constant speed can be tiring on long distances.
Today, finding a used Kawasaki ZRX 1200 R is a treasure hunt. Whether it's a 2004, 2005, or 2006 model, or the mythical Eddie Lawson Replica, they attract connoisseurs. These motorcycles represent the end of an era, that of muscular and simple roadsters, before the advent of electronics and the obsessive pursuit of lightweight construction. With a new price that hovered around 8000 euros at the time, it is now a golden opportunity for an experienced rider seeking raw character and charismatic mechanics. It won’t rival a modern MT-09 in agility, but it will teach it a lesson in character with every throttle opening.
