Overview
They called it the gentle giant, and for good reason. In 2003, the Kawasaki VN 1500, in its Tourer trim, placed its 337 kilograms dry weight on the pavement with a clear ambition: to offer a credible and comfortable alternative to American behemoths, without simply mimicking them. Its design, especially in this version, inevitably evokes certain Road Kings, but it is not plagiarism. It’s rather a Japanese interpretation, smoother and more technical, of grand touring custom. The base is that of the VN 1500 Classic, but transformed by a range of serious accessories: a large windscreen, lockable rigid saddlebags, a dashboard integrated into the tank, a wide seat, and reworked suspension for endurance. The result is a machine that, for around €15,000 new at the time, promised entire days of serenity.

But don't be fooled, beneath this veneer of peaceful tourer, the heart remains that of a true and proper custom. The engine, a 1470 cm3 V2, is not an athlete. With 64 horsepower delivered at 4900 rpm, you shouldn't expect roadster sensations. Its strength lies elsewhere, in a monstrous torque of 113 Nm available from 2800 rpm, which propels you effortlessly as soon as you twist the throttle. It's a locomotive, not a rocket. Shaft drive transmission ensures smooth, jerk-free progress, perfect for long straight lines, but quickly reminds you of the mass in motion in corners. The wheelbase of 1665 mm and the limited ground clearance mean the center stand quickly rubs, signaling a halt to sporting activities. For whom? Clearly for the serene globetrotter, the one who prefers to swallow up the kilometers while enjoying the scenery rather than chasing the stopwatch.
Compared to a Harley-Davidson of the time, the Kawasaki VN 1500 Tourer plays the card of mechanical reliability and relative economy. Electronic injection, widespread since 2000, is an asset for consumption and emissions, even with a 19-liter tank that requires regular stops. Braking, with its 280 and 320 mm discs, is effective without being brutal, sufficient to master this mass. This is the paradox of this machine: it is technically more modern and probably more reliable than many of its rivals, but it lacks that soul, that raw character that charms the American bikes. For a rider looking for a used Kawasaki VN 1500 without the supposed mechanical worries of another brand, this is a significant argument.
Today, finding a used Kawasaki VN 1500 Tourer is an excellent idea for those who want to get started in grand touring custom without breaking the bank. Versions like the Classic, the Mean Streak, or projects to transform them into bobbers or choppers are abundant on the used market. It is a robust platform, mechanically simple, and for which you can still find custom motorcycle parts for the Kawasaki VN 1500 or a workshop manual. Its major drawback remains its weight, very present at low speed and during maneuvers, which limits it to experienced riders. But once launched on the open road, it deploys all its value: unwavering comfort, ship-like stability, and that deep V2 rumble that, without equaling the racket of a Harley twin, has its own musicality. It is an honest machine, which does not claim to be what it is not. A good choice for the patient traveler, but a poor companion for those seeking excitement.
