Overview
When Kawasaki decided to extend its Versys range downward, nobody was really expecting a 300 cc urban adventure bike. And yet, the 2017 Versys-X 300 Urban slipped into a segment that was then in full bloom, alongside the BMW G 310 GS and the Suzuki V-Strom 250. Three different philosophies for the same promise: offering city riders and A2 license holders a machine capable of weaving between traffic lights during the week and escaping on weekends without breaking a sweat.

Beneath the adventurous bodywork lies a 296 cc parallel twin, fitted with four valves per cylinder and a 10.6:1 compression ratio. The 40 horsepower delivered at 11,500 rpm won't unsettle anyone on the highway, and top speed caps out at 160 km/h. But that's not the point. The 25.5 Nm of torque available at 10,000 rpm, channeled through a well-spaced six-speed gearbox, provides enough pull to dart through traffic with a touch of eagerness. The only regret is that the engine demands revs to give its best. At low rpm, the twin lacks grunt, and you have to work the shifter to keep the little Kawa in its optimal operating range. Compared to the G 310 GS and its single cylinder, more generous with torque from the low end, the Versys-X 300 requires a slightly more active riding style in the city.
The tubular steel frame, paired with a 41 mm telescopic fork offering 130 mm of travel and a rear mono-shock with 148 mm, forms a coherent package for mixed use. Nothing sophisticated, but it gets the job done on rough pavement. The 19-inch front and 17-inch rear wheels, fitted with 100/90 and 130/80 tires, provide reassuring stability and handle Parisian potholes adequately. Braking duties fall to a single 290 mm front disc with a two-piston caliper and a 220 mm rear disc — it gets the job done without standing out. Adequate for the machine's 175 kg wet weight, but a four-piston caliper up front would have been welcome for extra bite. The seat, perched at 845 mm, may intimidate shorter riders, even though the bike's contained weight partly compensates for that height.
What truly sets this Urban version apart from the standard Versys-X 300 is its equipment tailored for daily use. The 30-liter top case swallows a backpack or a laptop without fuss. The handguards protect your knuckles from cold mornings and urban spray. The tank pad spares the paint from bag and jacket rub. And the center stand, often reserved for higher-end models, greatly simplifies routine maintenance, chain lubrication first and foremost. For those wanting to push the adventure beyond the city ring road, Kawasaki also offers an Adventure variant with more off-road-oriented features.
At 6,299 euros, the Versys-X 300 Urban positions itself as an honest proposition for new license holders or city riders seeking a versatile first adventure bike. The 17-liter tank allows decent range, and the lightweight build makes the machine accessible to a broad audience. It doesn't claim to rival more powerful machines or turn every ride into an expedition. But for navigating between battered tarmac and Sunday spins on back roads, this little Kawasaki fulfills its brief with pragmatism. A daily tool rather than an object of passion, and that's precisely what's asked of it.
