Overview

Who said you need a big twin-cylinder and a €25,000 budget to play adventurer? Kawasaki, with its 2019 Versys-X 300 Adventure, takes the opposite bet. That of a lightweight, accessible machine, loaded with touring equipment, sold for €6,249. On paper, the promise is enticing. In practice, reality proves more nuanced.

Kawasaki Versys-X 300 Adventure

Beneath the 17-liter tank, the small 296 cc parallel twin delivers 40 horsepower at 11,500 rpm and 25.5 Nm of torque at 10,000 rpm. We're far from the generous power output of a Suzuki V-Strom 650 or a Yamaha Ténéré 700, but the comparison would be unfair. The Versys-X 300 doesn't hunt on the same grounds. Its playground is the winding national road on weekends, the dirt track behind the hill, the daily commute you want to make a little less monotonous. At 175 kg wet, it slips through anywhere and forgives a great deal from riders still green behind the ears. Its six-speed gearbox is well-spaced, even if the twin needs to be revved to give its best. The claimed top speed of 160 km/h remains theoretical: beyond 130, the engine vibrates and runs out of breath. That clearly sets the limits of the program.

What sets this Adventure version apart from the standard Versys-X is its bundle of accessories. Two 17-liter side cases each, crash bars to absorb falls without damaging the tubular steel frame, handguards, a gel tank pad, and a center stand. The complete kit for the small-scale adventurer, in short. Except the cases remain modest: you can fit a change of clothes and a picnic kit, not enough to set off on a three-week self-sufficient trip. The center stand, on the other hand, proves invaluable for chain maintenance or parking on soft ground. A genuine advantage that many competitors in this segment don't offer as standard.

On the chassis side, the 41 mm telescopic hydraulic fork offers 130 mm of travel up front, while the rear monoshock provides 148 mm. Enough to soak up road imperfections and a few graded tracks, but don't expect to tackle an African dirt road. The 19-inch front and 17-inch rear wheels, fitted with 100/90 and 130/80 tires, confirm this mixed-use vocation with a road-biased emphasis. Braking, handled by a single 290 mm disc up front and 220 mm at the rear with two-piston calipers, gets the job done without particular enthusiasm. The seat, perched at 845 mm, may intimidate more compact riders.

The real sticking point remains the price positioning. At €6,249, the Versys-X 300 Adventure costs notably more than a Honda CB500X, admittedly more powerful but accessible with an A2 license through restriction. Against the BMW G 310 GS, the duel is neck and neck, but the Bavarian benefits from a denser dealer and service network. Kawasaki targets here young A2 license holders who dream of adventure without wanting to wait two years, or urban riders seeking a versatile machine capable of escaping on weekends. The concept is sound, the execution honest, but the asking price weakens the package in a segment where buyers count every euro. The Versys-X 300 Adventure sells the dream of off-road riding in homeopathic doses. For those who accept its limits, it can become an endearing companion.
