Overview

Who said an adventure bike had to get dirty to earn its touring stripes? With the Kawasaki Versys 1000 SE Grand Tourer 2020, Akashi has definitively buried the line between maxi-trail and sport tourer. This machine no longer tries to play the rugged off-roader on dirt tracks. It fully embraces its road-going vocation, and it does so with a confidence that commands respect.

Kawasaki VERSYS 1000 SE Grand Tourer

Beneath the imposing fairing beats an inline four-cylinder displacing 1043 cc, rated at 120 horsepower at 9,000 rpm and 102 Nm of torque at 7,500 rpm. Not enough to rival the fury of an H2 SX SE+, but more than enough to devour A-roads and highways without ever straining the engine's character. The powerplant proves flexible from the mid-range onward, which makes all the difference when riding two-up with 103 liters of luggage capacity on the flanks. And that's precisely where the Grand Tourer package comes into its own: a 47-liter top case, two 28-liter side panniers, all color-matched to the bodywork and locked with the ignition key. No dangling keyrings, no mismatched padlocks. Kawasaki has thought about everyday convenience, right down to fitted inner bags for each case to organize your belongings without turning the packing process into a game of Tetris.

The standard equipment places this Versys 1000 SE a notch above the base version. KECS semi-active suspension on the 43 mm inverted fork and rear mono-shock, TFT dashboard, cruise control, traction control, hand guards, tall windscreen — the list is long, and the essentials for touring are covered without having to browse the accessories catalog. The Grand Tourer package adds auxiliary lights, tank protectors, a 12 V socket, and frame sliders. Only a GPS is missing to complete the program. Against a Yamaha Tracer 9 GT that's less expensive but also less equipped, or a BMW R 1250 RT that's more upmarket, the Kawasaki positions itself as the smart compromise at 19,099 euros. A price that remains substantial, but consistent with the level of specification.

The 257 kg wet weight fades from memory once on the move, thanks to a well-designed aluminum twin-spar frame and a solid chassis package. The brakes — dual 310 mm front discs clamped by four-piston calipers — deliver reassuring stopping power even when fully loaded. The seat height of 840 mm won't suit every rider's build, but the upright and uncluttered riding position eases the back on long-haul legs. The 21-liter fuel tank provides comfortable range between fill-ups, especially if you resist the temptation to exploit the 220 km/h top speed.

This Kawasaki Versys 1000 SE Grand Tourer 2020 is aimed at experienced tourers who want a complete travel tool without breaking the bank compared to German GTs. Those looking for a 2019 version on the used market or eyeing the 2021 through 2025 model years will find a virtually identical mechanical foundation — proof of the model's maturity. The competition may be stirring, but Kawasaki stays the course with a machine that makes no false promises: it will never climb a trail in Morocco, but it will link Brest to Dubrovnik without flinching. And that's exactly what's asked of it.
