Overview
Taking a maxi-trail weighing 230 kg, 100 horsepower on tap and 103 Nm of torque from 4,000 rpm, and slapping an "Urban" label on it — it takes a certain audacity to own that positioning. Suzuki owns it without apology with this variant of the V-Strom 1000, which carries over the 90° L-twin engine from the standard version and dresses it up with city-oriented accessories. The result is as thought-provoking as it is amusing.

The concept is straightforward: as with the 650, Suzuki offers several packs to customize its maxi-trail according to intended use. The Urban is one variant among others, alongside the Adventure and Tourer versions. In practical terms, this pack adds a 5-liter tank bag — expandable to 9 liters for days when the shopping overflows — a welcome centerstand for everyday maintenance, and a pair of handguards that serve both aesthetics and protection. Nothing revolutionary, but sensible additions for riders who regularly navigate urban environments.
The real question is one of purpose. A 1,037 cc trail bike, an 850 mm seat height and a 200 km/h top speed in Parisian or Lyonnais traffic is, above all, wasted horsepower. Where the 650 V-Strom slots more naturally into this versatile role, the big one-liter overshadows the urban narrative with its sheer bulk. The analogy with a luxury SUV tasked with picking up groceries at the corner supermarket holds up: it works, but it's rarely optimal. The 43 mm upside-down fork and the radially mounted dual 310 mm discs deserve better than speed bumps and red lights.
That said, it would be reductive to confine this V-Strom to a single reading. Its twin aluminum frame and suspensions with 160 mm of travel give it the foundations of a genuinely versatile trail bike, capable of leaving the city behind without excuses. At €12,899, it sits at the upper end of the segment, facing a BMW F 900 GS or a Honda CB500X that play in different registers. The Urban, for its part, bets on immediate practicality rather than outright performance.
The target audience is neither the track-day rider chasing thrills nor the adventurer dreaming of Afghan dirt roads. It's the versatile motorcyclist, already the owner of a big trail or about to become one, who wants an easier daily commute without buying a second bike. The tank bag, the centerstand and the handguards don't transform the V-Strom 1000 into a city scooter, but they make it less austere for day-to-day use. That's honest, and it's often enough.
