Overview
Who said an adventure bike had to get its rims dirty in the mud? With the Kawasaki Versys 1000 SE Grand Tourer 2019, Akashi definitively buries the line between maxi-trail and grand tourer. This machine fully embraces its road-going vocation, to the point of making the very idea of a pure GT in the green catalog almost redundant. The result is a 1043 cc inline four-cylinder developing 120 horsepower at 9,000 rpm and 102 Nm of torque at 7,500 rpm, all housed in an aluminum twin-spar frame. Not the most ferocious temperament in the segment, but plenty of grunt to swallow up the miles without breaking a sweat.

What sets the Grand Tourer version apart from the standard Versys 1000 SE is the turnkey touring package. Three color-matched cases totaling 103 liters of luggage capacity, with a generous top case and two lockable side panniers operated directly with the ignition key. Each compartment comes with a custom-fitted inner bag. Auxiliary lights, tank protectors, a 12 V socket, and engine sliders round out the kit. On paper, the direct competition goes by the names Suzuki V-Strom 1050 XT or Yamaha Tracer 9 GT, but neither offers this level of standard equipment at this price. Because the price does need addressing: 18,799 euros is not cheap. Those looking for a used 2019 or 2018 Kawasaki Versys 1000 SE Grand Tourer will find considerably more affordable examples on the second-hand market, and that's probably where the value-to-equipment ratio becomes truly formidable.
On the chassis side, Kawasaki has brought out the electronic heavy artillery. The KECS semi-active suspension, featuring a 43 mm inverted fork with 150 mm of travel and a mono-shock at 152 mm, adjusts its response in real time. Braking relies on twin 310 mm discs gripped by four-piston calipers up front and a 250 mm disc at the rear. The TFT display centralizes information, cruise control relieves the right wrist on the highway, and traction control keeps things in check. At 257 kg wet and with a 21-liter tank, the machine demands a degree of confidence at low speed. The seat perched at 840 mm won't make life easy for shorter riders, even if the upright riding position and standard handguards compensate with long-haul comfort.
The Kawasaki Versys 1000 SE Grand Tourer 2020 and subsequent model years — 2021, 2022, and even 2023 — refined the recipe without any major revolution. Updates focused on mapping and finish details, meaning the 2019 model remains perfectly relevant for anyone wanting to ride far without spending a fortune. Against the BMW R 1250 GS, more versatile off-road but significantly pricier, or the Honda NT1100 that has appeared since, more road-oriented but less well-equipped, the Versys plays the card of the intelligent compromise. It doesn't claim to ford rivers or attack mountain passes in sport mode. It simply offers to devour miles of tarmac with method, comfort, and an inline-four smoothness that twins simply cannot match. The regular long-distance rider, the one who chains 600-kilometer days with a passenger and luggage, will find a faithful ally here. Those craving sharper thrills will turn to the H2 SX SE, positioned in an entirely different league of performance. The Versys 1000 SE Grand Tourer 2024 and 2025 continue this philosophy without changing course. Kawasaki knows where this bike is headed, and it's far.
