Overview

When Kawasaki decides to transform its most versatile sport-tourer into a long-distance machine, the result leaves no one indifferent. The Kawasaki Ninja 1000 SX Performance Tourer pushes the concept to its limits, with two combined packs that transform the base SX into something ambiguous, caught between the committed sport-GT and the functional tourer. Ambiguous, but not a failure.

Kawasaki Ninja 1000 SX Performance Tourer

The engine, an inline four-cylinder of 1043cc derived from the Z 1000, develops 142 horsepower at 10,000 rpm and 110.8 Nm of torque at 8,000 rpm. It is not the raw power that impresses — the BMW S1000XR plays in the same league with similar output — it is the way that power settles into everyday riding. Power modes, quickshifter, assist clutch, traction control, IMU inertial measurement unit, intelligent ABS with cornering management: Kawasaki has put everything on the table to keep those 142 horsepower manageable, whatever the situation. At 241 kg fully fuelled, the bike is no lightweight, but it remains within the category norm. The 835 mm seat height and 19-litre tank confirm a profile oriented toward tall riders and long distances.

The Performance and Tourer packs add a layer of equipment that genuinely changes how the bike is used. Two panniers of 28 litres each integrate carefully into the flanks of the motorcycle without disfiguring the sporty lines of the fairing. The wide tinted screen, heated grips, GPS mount housed between the half-handlebars, engine crash protection and gel tank pad compose a serious picture for the rider who devours kilometres. Add to this the near-fully carbon Akrapovic exhaust option, which shaves 2.7 kg from the machine, frees up the stock 142 horsepower slightly and finally gives a worthy voice to this naturally discreet four-cylinder. The power gain is symbolic; the acoustic effect considerably less so.

There is, however, one limit that Kawasaki has not crossed, and it is a frustrating one. The side panniers cannot be paired with an official top case. For a machine that presents itself as the direct successor to the Kawasaki Ninja 1000 SX Performance Tourer in its 2020 lineage, it is a choice that raises questions. The loaded touring rider carrying family luggage or camping gear will have to forgo the third case or find an alternative solution. Compared to a Ducati Multistrada V4 or a Honda NT1100 that impose no such compromise, this is a missed commercial argument.

Kawasaki Ninja 1000 SX Performance Tourer

The base price of 17,049 euros climbs noticeably once the two packs and the Akrapovic exhaust are added up. The accessories bill quickly exceeds 2,700 euros, and the overall invoice dangerously approaches the pricing of premium competitors. The target audience — the experienced long-distance rider who wants a do-it-all machine without giving up weekend sporting pleasure — must therefore make a clear-headed choice. The Ninja 1000 SX in this configuration remains an honest, well-equipped proposition, with a 10.9 cm TFT screen, cruise control, smartphone connectivity and multi-adjustment suspension. But it makes no claim to dethroning the premium GTs. It offers something else: pragmatic efficiency, an engine that does not falter over the long haul, and a versatility that few machines of this displacement handle as well.
