Overview
Who buys a bagger for over 30,000 euros in 2023 without even glancing toward Milwaukee? Those who are tired of seeing their reflection in the chrome of every Harley parked at a truck stop. The 2023 Indian Springfield Dark Horse plays precisely on that turf. The turf of the rider who wants the American format, the big twin, the massive road presence, but refuses to blend into the herd. With its matte black treatment punctuated by bright accents on the fins and exhaust, this Springfield cultivates a stern elegance that cuts sharply against the usual chrome festivals. The 12-inch ape-hanger handlebars, the blacked-out covers, the flared front fender echoing 1920s Indian design: every detail contributes to a cohesive aesthetic, far from a simple rattle-can black-out on a catalog model.

Beneath that dark suit beats the Thunderstroke 116, a 49-degree V-twin displacing 1890 cc that isn't chasing raw power but torque. And what torque. With 170.9 Nm available from just 2900 rpm, this engine pushes hard and early, exactly where a 358 kg bagger needs it. The 90 horsepower looks modest on paper, especially against the 93 hp of a Harley Road King Special, but the comparison falls apart quickly when you look at the torque curve. The big Indian twin delivers its thrust with a smoothness that the Milwaukee Eight doesn't quite match. The top speed of 180 km/h is more than enough for the intended use. You don't ride a Springfield Dark Horse to challenge sportbikes on the highway; you ride it to devour back roads with authority. The 2023 model year brings a lighter clutch, a detail that matters when maneuvering a machine of this size in traffic. For those interested in a used Indian Springfield Dark Horse, the 2019, 2020, or 2021 versions remain excellent deals, even though they carry the older 111 engine with less generous torque.
The electronics have caught up at Spirit Lake. Three engine maps — Tour, Standard, and Sport — let you tailor the twin's character to the mood of the moment. Tour mode smooths the throttle response for long hauls. Standard offers a solid everyday compromise. Sport unleashes a sharp, almost aggressive response for twisty stretches. The built-in cruise control, incidentally, answers a frequent question from prospective buyers and confirms the machine's touring orientation. Another clever technical feature: rear cylinder deactivation at a standstill, which reduces heat radiating toward the rider in traffic jams. A system Harley has since adopted as well, proof the idea was sound.
With its low seat perched at just 650 mm, its 20.8-liter tank, and its cast aluminum frame, the Springfield Dark Horse targets the experienced rider looking for a road companion without the bulky fairings of a full tourer. It weighs 358 kg wet, which is still substantial, but that's forty kilos less than a Roadmaster. The braking, handled by dual floating ABS discs up front and a single ABS disc at the rear, proves equal to the mass on board. The generous 1701 mm wheelbase guarantees ocean-liner stability in a straight line, even if the ground clearance limited to 130 mm quickly reminds you of its limits in tight corners.
The real sticking point remains the price. At 30,490 euros, the 2023 Indian Springfield Dark Horse sits squarely opposite the Harley Sport Glide and above the Low Rider ST, two machines that offer a sportier temperament for a comparable or lower budget. The choice comes down to personality. If you want a sharp-looking bagger with bold character, capable of racking up miles without the bulk of a full-dresser, and Harley conformity bores you, this Springfield deserves a test ride. As for accessories and customization, the Indian catalog has expanded considerably in recent years, even if it doesn't yet rival the Harley-Davidson ecosystem. A machine with character, built for long ribbons of asphalt, proving that the American V-twin war is now being fought on two fronts.
