Overview
The Ultra Limited never tires of evolving, of offering even more, of bathing in a delicious sense of motorcycling self-satisfaction. It's the frontier before the CVO touring models, after the desire to travel through countries, between the road and time. The Ultra Limited doesn's compromise when it comes to defining the journey. And since Harley can refuse it nothing, what better way to power this vessel than with a huge engine?!
The Milwaukee Eight will be up to the task. Without going into too much detail, we're noting the major evolutions of this 9th generation twin. The MoCo has given itself an engine capable of delivering much more power while meeting increasingly stringent standards, those of tomorrow and beyond. With 4 valves per cylinder, dual ignition, partial liquid cooling, a balance shaft absorbing 75% of vibrations at idle, improved gas flow, and more displacement than the Twin Cam, the M8 changes the dimension of Harley engines. The power? In the upper echelons of Big Block history. In 2019, the mechanical component went from 107 to 114 cubic inches. Apart from in the CVO and ST ranges, you won't find anything bigger, fatter, or more demanding than this twin. As for power, the maximum hasn't changed, announced at just under 90 horsepower. But this value is achieved earlier in the RPM range. It's the torque that benefits the most, climbing from 15.5 to 16.3 ft-lbs. And just above 3000 RPM. A bear-like force perfectly suited to the majesty of this liner.
The kind of machine that each owner never tires of admiring. One eye to admire it, the other to keep an eye on it. Harley now offers a way to appease both eyes. Since 2020, you can be alerted to any bumps or attempted remote theft. The H-D Connect service allows you to keep a watchful eye on this luxurious tourer from your smartphone; and this wherever there is network coverage. The app also allows you to see a wealth of information such as range, odometer, battery charge, updates for the Boom Box, fuel level, notifications about maintenance, etc... One step further in connectivity, while electronic systems invade the dynamics of the Limited.
Let's go back a bit to the Milwaukee Eight, patient but certain in its desire to send its big 16 ft-lbs to the rear tire and highways. Even if the clientele of this type of machine doesn't like sporty driving, they may encounter delicate situations. Such as a winding road where the big torque could become playful. With traction control, Harley provides a sense and action of additional safety. Two modes are assigned to it: 'Standard' when the road is dry and 'Rain' when it's glistening with moisture. For purists, this C-TCS can be disconnected. There are other active modules in this touring. Conversely to anti-wheelspin, an anti-dribble is there to quell the violent return of force from the rear wheel. The C-DSCS acts on the engine torque to equalize what the rear wheel sends back and what the engine distributes. Let's not miss the ABS, which maintains braking as needed by the rider, for a start on a slightly steep slope for example. There is also a tire pressure monitoring system TPMS, an electronic synchronization of the coupled braking system depending on the angle C-ELB, and finally an active curve ABS control C-ABS. Briefly, a great deal of driving assistance as seen on much more spirited models. All this equipment, introduced in 2020, is grouped under the name RDRS, the Reflex Defensive Rider Systems - the explanations here ->. Anecdotally, the tire size goes to 18 inches.
The Limited is enriched with equipment almost continuously. Let's recall what the Rushmore project offered in 2014, namely an abundance of improvements. Four years of listening to customers, gathering feedback and ideas, returning information, and finally, a discreet leap forward in all areas. Still as delicious, but its performance became of a different caliber. What about it? Let's start with a scalpel stroke in the fairing. Harley also dares to modify its timeless "Batwing" head tube. After 3000 attempts, a central air intake is cut under the windshield, in order to equalize the air pressure and reduce turbulence around the rider's helmet. It opens and closes with a simple press of a button. Then, it's a cocktail of practicality and style that subtly modifies the peripherals of the Limited. The Tour Pak, more compact, still offers 4% additional capacity. The slimmer saddlebags also give more storage space. These luggage elements open with a single press. Furthermore, they are lockable thanks to a One-Touch button, as well as the tank flap, the Jukebox compartment and the glove boxes.
In the mid-2010s, Harley switched to a new dimension of entertainment with the BOOM Box. It's time to modernize this system with the GTS version. Equipped with a faster processor and increased memory, the module now takes ten seconds to start up and promises to be much faster for route calculation. A new screen doubles the resolution, offers more contrast and is more sensitive and efficient with gesture control. The system is compatible with Apple CarPlay, which allows you to project the content of your iPhone onto the 6.5-inch TFT color screen. Navigation has been simplified, allowing you to more easily enjoy via touch or joystick the GPS, the radio, the audio content you bring via smartphone, iPod, SD card or USB key, voice recognition, the 25 watts per channel (4), Bluetooth, intercom, etc. Let's stay in the context of life on board to discover how comfort takes care of the crew. For the rider, we have seen, beautiful and complete instrumentation, heated grips and cruise control. It's on the passenger side that the gain is felt. Longer and wider seat by 2.5 cm, saddlebag protectors lowered, backrest revised in height, width, angle and shape for greater comfort, speakers offset and adjustable armrests. With that, it’s impossible not to please madam.
More than ever before, this Touring should have been rebadged from Limited to Unlimited. After optimizing the engine, comfort and entertainment, Harley had also focused on the chassis. Lighter and stiffer wheels, of course. A 49 mm fork, yes. A refined suspension, OK. And to encompass braking, the Reflex combined with ABS system. Simply put, the front and rear brakes work independently below 25 mph. Above that, the linked braking system activates and an electronic management distributes the braking between the front and rear. 2017 continued this momentum with a more effective Showa fork and emulsion shocks. The preload adjustment is made with a knob. Not only more effective, the suspension is also more constant. The lighting also evolved, with a Daymaker LED headlight supplemented by halogen turn signals. Not only offering more brightness, the Daymaker technology also brings a surprisingly modern visual touch. In total, these eyes distribute 2136 lumens to pierce the darkness. Do these numbers mean anything to you? Neither do I.
In its 1690 "phase 2" version, the Limited also adopted controls with remote functions on the handlebars, a new front fender, new medallions, more visible instrumentation and a new electrical harness for battery charging. By retaining as much style as possible, which is the pride of the Electra, this hymn to the road once again offers much more, for a slight inflation. Increase anyway almost transparent given the sum required to have the right to cruise on such an engine. Seated on a striking Milwaukee Eight 114 Ultra Limited, you have no excuse not to treat yourself to thousands of km.
