Overview

When Indian decided to plunge its lineup into darkness, nobody complained. After the Chief and the Chieftain, it's the Springfield's turn to don the Dark Horse costume, and the result is worth a closer look. The 2021 Indian Springfield Dark Horse isn't just a styling exercise in matte black. It's a bagger that fully embraces its dual personality, blending American muscle with onboard technology. Up against a Harley-Davidson Road King Special or a Street Glide, the Polaris offering plays a different card — more refined, more airy in its approach to long-distance touring.

Indian Springfield Dark Horse

Beneath this blacked-out treatment beats the Thunderstroke 116, a 1,890 cc V-twin that doesn't do things by halves. With 90 hp and especially 168 Nm of torque available from just 2,900 rpm, this twin pushes like a locomotive diesel. The 11.1:1 compression ratio and generous 103 x 113 mm bore and stroke figures confirm the long-stroke character of the engine, built to devour miles without revving high. Three fuel injection maps let you tailor the throttle response to your mood. Tour mode smooths out the power delivery for cruising, Standard offers an effective everyday compromise, and Sport unleashes the horses unfiltered. You also get rear cylinder deactivation at a standstill, a welcome feature to limit the heat rising from the crankcases in traffic. Cruise control, a question many ask, is indeed part of the standard equipment. On the fuel consumption front, the 20.8-liter tank provides decent range for an engine of this displacement, with an average hovering around 5 to 6 l/100 km depending on riding pace. Top speed caps out at 180 km/h, which is more than enough for a machine of this calling.

The Dark Horse treatment transforms the Springfield into a rolling monolith. Matte black on the bodywork, gloss black on the crankcases and rocker covers, with only the cooling fins and the exhaust line breaking through with their metallic shine. The 12-inch ape-hanger handlebars, the telescopic fork, the mirrors, the footpegs — everything goes black. The Indian Springfield Dark Horse accessories catalog then lets you personalize the whole package to your taste, from hard saddlebags to engine guards. The front end stands out with a valanced fender inspired by 1920s-30s Indians, hovering over a 19-inch wheel that gives the machine a more open stance than classic tourers shod with 16-inchers at both ends. The 180/60-B16 rear tire ensures stability.

At 358 kg wet and a seat height of 660 mm, the Indian Springfield Dark Horse makes no attempt to hide its heft. But compared to the Roadmaster and its 400-plus kg, it almost passes for a slim machine. The cast aluminum frame with integrated airbox, the pneumatically adjustable rear mono-shock suspension, and the ABS braking system with dual floating front discs deliver a level of mechanical rigor that the weight alone wouldn't suggest. The belt-driven six-speed transmission contributes to riding comfort and keeps maintenance to a minimum. Keyless ignition and tire pressure monitoring round out a solid electronics package.

At €28,790, this 2021 version squares up against the most premium Harleys. The 2019 and 2020 Indian Springfield Dark Horse model years had already laid the groundwork with the switch to the 116 engine and aesthetic refinements. The 2021 model fine-tunes the recipe without reinventing it. For the touring rider seeking a bagger with character, capable of devouring back roads and highways alike with tractor-like torque and a visual presence that doesn't go unnoticed, the Springfield Dark Horse remains a credible alternative to Milwaukee's offerings. Less common, more exclusive, it appeals to those who want to ride American without seeing their reflection at every gas station. It can also be found used across the 2018 to 2023 model years, often with low mileage, making it an attractive entry point into the Indian universe for anyone willing to work with the size.
