Overview

Who, in 2024, can still claim to rival the Harley-Davidson Ultra Limited on the grand touring American-style battlefield? Indian, obviously. And the Indian Roadmaster remains its sharpest weapon in this century-old duel. A 1890 cc V-twin under the hood, 126.1 lb-ft of torque available from just 2900 rpm, 908 lbs on the scale fully fueled. The numbers set the scene. We're not talking about a nervous sportbike — we're talking about a luxury liner built to devour continents.

Indian Roadmaster

The ThunderStroke 116 cubic inches has matured over the years. Since the Indian Roadmaster 2020, revised cylinder heads and a compression ratio raised to 11:1 have given this already generous powertrain a second wind. The 90 horsepower looks modest on paper, but it's the torque that does the heavy lifting. From the very first wheel rotation, the thrust is strong, linear, almost lazy — as if the engine never has to strain. Three ride maps, Tour, Standard, and Sport, let you adjust throttle response to suit your mood. In Tour mode, smoothness reigns for long-haul stretches. In Sport, the twin wakes up with a responsiveness that surprises for a machine of this size. Against Harley's Milwaukee Eight, it's a close match. The Indian engine stands out with a smoother character, less vibration, and a deep rumble all its own. A rear cylinder deactivation system at idle limits the heat directed toward your legs — a detail that regular summer traffic jam sufferers will appreciate.

On the equipment front, the Roadmaster doesn't hold back. The 7-inch Ride Command touchscreen centralizes GPS navigation, the 200-watt audio system with speed-adjusted dynamic equalizer, Bluetooth, and vehicle information. The leather seat is heated, with separate rider and passenger controls. The heated grips offer ten temperature levels. The windshield is power-adjustable. Starting is keyless. Tire pressure monitoring comes standard, along with ABS, cruise control, full LED lighting, and three 12V outlets. The faired side panels integrate adjustable vents to cool your knees when temperatures climb. Chrome is everywhere, from the fork to the trunk rails to the Highway Bars. For those looking for Indian Roadmaster accessories, the aftermarket catalog is extensive, but the stock equipment already covers the essentials.

Storage capacity reaches 137 liters thanks to the saddlebags and the padded top case. That's comparable to what the Honda Gold Wing offers — the Japanese benchmark in the segment. The passenger benefits from adjustable footrests and a comfortable seat. The 5.5-gallon tank provides decent range for an engine of this displacement. The seat, perched at 26.5 inches, remains accessible despite the machine's imposing dimensions. The cast aluminum frame and air-adjustable rear suspension absorb the miles without complaint, even if the 46 mm telescopic fork could use a touch more sophistication compared to certain European competitors.

At €34,690, the Indian Roadmaster 2024 is clearly positioned at the top of the touring segment. That's an Indian Roadmaster price justified by a level of fit and finish that's hard to fault. For tighter budgets, the used Indian Roadmaster market offers great opportunities, particularly the Indian Roadmaster 2019, 2020, or 2021 model years, which share essentially the same technical platform as today's bike. The Indian Roadmaster Elite version pushes the envelope even further on paint and finishes for the purists. This machine is aimed at long-distance riders, fans of American engineering who want to travel far, comfortably, with no compromise on style. It won't convince track enthusiasts or hurried city riders. But on an open highway stretching toward the horizon, it reigns supreme.
