Overview
One hundred and twenty-five years. That is how long it took Indian to go from a fifty-kilogram motorized bicycle, cobbled together by Oscar Hedström and George Hendee in a Springfield backyard, to this 372 kg behemoth powered by a 1,834 cc V-twin capable of delivering 181 Nm from just 3,800 rpm. The ground covered is staggering, and the brand has chosen to celebrate it with all the American excess it can muster.

The Challenger 125th Anniversary Edition is not simply a bagger with a fresh coat of paint for the occasion. It is a limited edition of 250 units worldwide, and each one bears its serial number engraved on the center console. The "Anniversary Red & Black Crystal" finish requires more than thirty hours of hand work, something that shows and feels from the very first glance. The two-tone livery plays on contrasts with a precision that is a reminder that Springfield still knows, when the moment calls for it, how to dress for the occasion. The quilted seat with embroidery, the badges on the engine covers, the specific tank lettering — none of this is window dressing: it is surface craftsmanship, conceived for those who look long and hard before they ride.
Beneath this gala attire, the mechanics are no mere decoration. The 60-degree PowerPlus V-twin produces 126 horsepower and pulls with anvil-like consistency through the mid-range, which suits the Grand Touring character this machine claims for itself. Measured against the Harley-Davidson Road Glide Special or its CVO variants, the Challenger holds its ground on the technological front: 43 mm inverted forks, radial four-piston Brembo brakes on 320 mm discs up front, traction control, three riding modes, rear-cylinder deactivation in urban traffic. The onboard electronics are generous, with a radar system managing blind spots and approach alerts, a seven-inch color TFT display, GPS navigation, Bluetooth, keyless ignition, and tire pressure monitoring. A 400-watt four-speaker audio system rounds out a package clearly aimed at the rider for whom comfort is not an option but a requirement.

The seat sits at 672 mm, which remains manageable for a rider of average build, but the 372 kg fully fueled leaves no room for clumsy low-speed maneuvering. This bagger is built to devour highways, not to thread through underground parking garages. The claimed top speed of 180 km/h is not a riding target — it is an indication of temperament: that of a premium cruiser that carves its path with the same unhurried authority as an ocean liner. The 22.7-liter tank allows for long stretches without range anxiety, entirely in keeping with the machine's purpose.

At €45,990, the question of positioning is a straightforward one. Indian is not trying to win over the novice or seduce the performance rider in search of thrills. This anniversary edition speaks to the aficionado of American motorcycle culture, the long-haul rider who wants something his neighbor does not have and who might one day find his machine's number on a collector's document twenty years from now. It is an object of passion as much as a touring tool, and the two roles coexist without contradiction. The price stings, but it is part of the contract that comes with a limited series built by hand down to its finest details. The Roadmaster 125th Anniversary, powered by the air-cooled Thunderstroke 116, offers an even more imposing alternative but is not distributed in Europe. All the better for the Challenger, which needs no internal competition to establish itself as the most accomplished bagger in the Springfield catalog.
