Overview
The Scout is a family in its own right. Comprising five members, it caters to diverse tastes, ranging from bobber to small touring, all while humming classic tunes. With the 101, Indian offers a Scout more powerful than the Sport. Ready to deliver thrills at the handlebars, that’s all it asks.
With its aggressive paint schemes, the tone embraces without delay. The Scout shows its teeth, with the assurance of its watts. It is the only member of the sorority to produce 111 hp from the SpeedPlus twin. A bit more power and torque, to show that it’s in charge; and to assert its role as a fighter. Torque is also somewhat increased, to 11.1 mkg. For all other Scout models, the jam is less sweet but still abundant given the engine's evolution. The previous 3170 cm3 displacement has been replaced by a completely revised engine, with a displacement of 1250 m3, redesigned crankcases, reworked injection, and a new gearbox.
The most significant transformation concerns the chassis. The steel tubular frame, a true departure from the previous aluminum element, is reinforced with much more muscular components. The front end promises excellent efficiency, with its 43 mm inverted fork, adjustment possibilities, and Brembo braking. It’s not the top of the catalog, like the M50 or Stylema, highly regarded for their trap-shooting braking performance, but the M4.32 calipers know how to do a good job. They already demonstrate this on the FTR 1200. Especially since the 101 doubles down with two brake discs, 320 mm in diameter. Note the absence of a speedo drive, removing grams and unsprung mass. Agility appreciates that. However, why fit a 19-inch wheel with a 130 mm wide tire? American sport imprints codes that are sometimes difficult to understand.
Two Piggyback shock absorbers, of higher quality, are invited at the rear, just below a Gunfighter seat designed to position the posterior for virile acceleration. The handlebar places the hands in a dominant position, with 150 mm machined risers. The Scout 101 has also decided to pamper its rider with assistance. The equipment reserved for the "Limited +Tech" finish level on other Scout models is included as standard here. This means the presence of a 4-inch circular TFT screen with Ride Command, Bluetooth, 3 Riding Modes (Sport – Standard – Touring), traction control, a USB port, keyless start, and cruise control.
Ready to discover with its optimized body, the Indian does not forget its ego, with a mix of bobber and club-style in its appearance. Between its machined rim spokes, its small fork head, the rear fender truncated with a machete, the footrests at the front, and the black finish on all levels, the 101 wants to be as mean as it needs to be. Its weight of 249 kg places it among the lighter models of the manufacturer but not the slimmest either. The Scout Bobber sibling benefits from a better power band. And the FTR models are the best equipped on the scales.
The 21st century Scout range had never had a model oriented towards performance, with steel drool at the corners of the lips. The 101 takes on this role, with a nice reference in the rearview mirror.
Again, Indian has chosen a strong image from its past to present this acronym "101." A dive into 1928, where Philip K. Dick was born, a few weeks after Hirohito was named the 124th Emperor of Japan…. Do we care!? Ok, let's look at the States instead, where the Scout 101 has just been released in 37 ci and 45 ci, the sportiest model in the Indian range. A very popular machine at the time and one that everyone knows, then and now. But yes, it was for decades the favorite machine in the spectacular wall of death. About a century later, the 101 takes up the torch of a sporty Scout.
