Overview

Who said that a large sportbike had to come from Italy and cost a fortune? At the turn of the 2000s, Honda launched its own splash with the VTR 1000 F Firestorm. The idea was clear: to offer the brutal sensations of a 90° V2 without the hassles and price of a transalpine machine. With its 106 horsepower and 93 Nm of torque available from low RPM, the engine is a true statement of intent. It rumbles, it pulls, it lifts the front without warning, far from the polished linearity sometimes associated with the brand. This twin is a breath of fresh air, or rather a slap in the face, in a landscape then dominated by hyper-revving four-cylinder engines.

However, this character comes at a price, and not just at the pump. The original fuel tank, ridiculous with its 16 liters, condemned the rider to incessant stops. Honda reacted in 2001 by increasing the capacity to 19 liters, a welcome improvement but one that does not transform the Firestorm into a touring machine. Its voracious appetite remains legendary. It’s the drawback of a quality: this engine is so playful and generous in sensations that you almost forgive its thirst. In terms of the chassis, agility is present thanks to an aluminum twin-spar frame and a direct steering feel. The 41 mm fork and single shock offer a good compromise, firm and precise, except when the asphalt becomes truly tortuous.

Faced with competitors such as the Ducati 900 SS of the time or the Suzuki TL1000S, the Honda positions itself as a more civilized alternative, but barely. It is less mechanically demanding than a Ducati, less nervous at low RPM than a Suzuki, but it retains this soul of a twin that appeals to riders seeking character without complexity. Its braking, although correct, can show its limits in very sporty use, a point where the Italians often kept an advantage. But at 9900 euros new, it offered a sensations/price ratio that was difficult to beat.

So, what is your opinion of the Honda VTR 1000 F Firestorm today? For whom does it ride? Clearly, it does not target the beginner, frightened by its immediate torque and its weight of 221 kg fully fueled. It will rather seduce the motorcyclist who has a bit of experience, the enthusiast of vibrant mechanics who wants a sportbike usable daily without choosing a sanitized GT. It is a motorcycle with character, tailored for winding roads and smiles on acceleration, but which will remind you to order at the approach of the nearest service station. A flaw that, ultimately, contributes to its charm and its cult bike status for lovers of pure and hard V2 engines.
