Overview
Can a Japanese custom really play the tough guy? With its ground-hugging silhouette and a name borrowed from the least friendly spider in the bestiary, the 2003 Honda VT 750 DC Black Widow attempts the feat. It arrives with a promise: to be the lowest and most stretched of the large-series bikes of the time. And on paper, it succeeds. With a seat only 67.5 cm from the tarmac and a short handlebar that brings your wrists back towards your hips, the riding position is radical. You sit *in* the bike, almost lying down on its muscular tank, rather than on top of it. This is a philosophy opposite to the more conventional Harley-Davidson bikes of the time, and it gives it a unique visual identity, reinforced by its large 19-inch front wheel and its shortened rear fender. However, for a black widow, it severely lacks venom.

Because that’s where the problem lies. Beneath this bad boy look hides the traditional and very sensible 745 cm3 V-twin from Honda. With 45 horsepower at 5500 rpm and 63.7 Nm of torque available low in the rev range, the engine is smooth, reliable, and… terribly refined. It swallows the miles without a tremor, but it never provides that brutal push in the lower back that you would expect from a custom with such an aggressive profile. The braking, with its single disc at the front and drum at the rear, goes in the same direction: sufficient for relaxed riding, but without bite. It’s far from the deadly bite that its name suggested. It’s a pacifist in a black evening gown.
Who rides this Black Widow, then? Certainly not a track rider seeking thrills. Its audience is the urban customizer who prioritizes style and attitude over pure performance. It is perfect for relaxed rides where you want to stand out, benefiting from reassuring stability due to its low center of gravity. But with a 13.4-liter tank and reasonable consumption, it can also play the long-distance traveler, provided you accept its top speed capped around 160 km/h. The double cradle frame and 41 mm fork ensure correct comfort, but the dry weight of 221 kg is felt at low speed or in the parking lot.
Ultimately, the technical specifications of the Honda VT 750 DC Black Widow reveal a motorcycle with a split personality. On one hand, an ultra-coherent and bold aesthetic that has aged with a certain grace. On the other hand, an engine and equipment that are too sensible, almost timid, which have not followed the boldness of the design. At its price at the time, around 7500 euros, it offered a stylized alternative to American customs, but without their sound and mechanical character. It’s a style icon for those who want a unique silhouette without mechanical hassles, a spider from which the hooks have been carefully removed.
