Overview
How do you make a 745 cc V-twin feel like a street brute with only 45 horsepower? Honda wrestled with that question in 2004 with the VT 750 DC Black Widow, a custom that fully embraces a low and long attitude. The result is visually striking, with an extreme riding position: a short handlebar, a stepped and lowered two-seater saddle at 675 mm, and this muscular tank that seems to pull the rider downwards. The wheelbase of 1615 mm and the large 19-inch front wheel accentuate this impression of a low-slung, almost reptilian machine. This is far from classic customs, closer to a radical styling exercise where the rider is supposed to "become one" with the machine rather than ride it.

But beneath this black widow costume, the engine remains a good citizen. The 52° V-twin delivers 45 hp at 5500 rpm and 63.7 Nm of torque at 3000 rpm, figures that place the Black Widow in the category of accessible customs, not power monsters. With a compression ratio of 9:1 and a bore of 79 mm, this engine is designed for regularity and ease, not adrenaline rushes. The announced top speed of 160 km/h and the 13.4-liter tank confirm this quiet road vocation, where pleasure comes from the posture and the look, not from raw performance.
The technical specifications of the Honda VT 750 DC Black Widow also reveal some surprising choices for a stylistically-oriented machine. The mixed braking system, with a 296 mm disc at the front and a 180 mm drum at the rear, seems to come from a previous era, especially on a custom that wants to be aggressive. The chain transmission and 5-speed gearbox are robust but unglamorous solutions, while the dry weight of 221 kg, combined with the low power, can make acceleration rather placid. Compared to some American competitors or even other more lively Japanese customs, the Black Widow stands out for its balance: it offers stable handling thanks to its steel double cradle frame and 41 mm telescopic fork, but never seeks to jolt its rider.
Ultimately, this motorcycle is a fascinating paradox. It clearly targets the urban rider or touring enthusiast who seeks a strong presence without the complications of a demanding engine. Its price of 7470 euros at the time positioned it as a stylish option in the custom range, but its moderate engine character leaves an impression of a look not matched by the internals. It is a machine that grabs attention with its design, but whose venom is diluted: ideal for those who prioritize attitude and a low posture over a debauch of power, but frustrating for those who hope for a truly aggressive road companion. The Black Widow remains therefore a unique object, a Honda style statement that marked its time without revolutionizing the genre.
